PL R19: SPORTING 3-2 Benfica; Alvalade, 21.02.2009

The most crucial series of matches for Sporting in the current season starts tonight with no more no less than the biggest game of our football. The eternal "Clássico" between the Green and White Lions and the Red Eagles comes in a key moment of the season for both sides. Still, it is Sporting who needs most to take the 3 points out of this game, as anything but that will virtually take us off the title race. Our neighbours seem to be uber-confident especially after their fairly good display at the scum pit a couple of weeks ago but it is known that form is something that counts very little in this tie.

Rui Patrício, Miguel Veloso and Adrien are injured so they haven't been called. Too bad about the last, who is starting to confirm all the potential quality promised during his youth career. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the other two, who have been consistently irregular in the last two seasons.

This is the official starting XI for the game that starts at 21:00 CET:

Tiago
Pedro Silva - Carriço - Polga - Grimi
Rochemback
Izmailov - Vukcevic
João Moutinho
Liedson - Hélder Postiga

Subs: Ricardo Batista, Abel, Tonel, Caneira, Pereirinha, Romagnoli, Derlei and Yannick Djaló.

What a ****ing screamer of a volley by the one and only Levezinho

Complete domination by Sporting. Deserved lead.

At 26' a forced substitution for us. Postiga goes off limping and Derlei comes in.

Handball by Maxi Pereira inside Benfica's box but guess what....no penalty, of course.

1-1 at HT

Sporting started in a demolishing way and rightly reached the 1-0 through Liedson who scored one of the greatest goals that I remember having seen in the many clássicos that I've watched.

As it has been unfortunately the case so many times this season, we took completely the foot off the pedal after being ahead on the score and gave the initiative to Benfica who, in spite of that, only managed to create danger once on an open situation and a second time after one of several non-existing free kicks won by the duo of red ballerinas Pablita & Gitanita.

Their goal came from one of those brain farts that afflict our experienced CB Anderson Polga and it was indeed a penalty - just like it was indeed a penalty the blatant handball of Maxi Pereira that stopped a deadly curled shot by Izmailov. The difference was that, obviously, this time, Olegário didn't see it.

I feel we still can win this game, in spite of all the odds.

Nice pass from Moutinho - Super cross from Pereirinha - super header from Liedson

Life is sometimes too cruel. During half time of the match I received a phone call from Portugal giving me the sad news about the unexpected death of a very dear uncle of mine. It was the saddest of all Sporting wins and one that I will never forget.

Filipe, I'd like to offer my condolences to you and your family. It's tragedies like that which put sport into perspective; none of this shit really matters. I've experienced a fair share of deaths in my family recently, from grandmother to grandfather to uncles and aunts. Stay strong. RIP.

It's in times like these that we realize just how irrational our love for this sport is. I can imagine how you're feeling because a similar thing happened to me - in my case it was my grandfather. But, for some reason I can't explain, we quickly return to being strongly affected by what our players do on a football pitch.

My sincere condolences.

Thanks a lot. The most ironic thing is that he was one of the main persons responsible for my love for Sporting. Somehow I just hope he saw the game somewhere.
