PL R25 SPORTING 2-0 Sp. Braga; Alvalade, 06.04.2008

After another solid performance and two consecutive 4-1 wins for the league we face one of the toughest matches still left on the way to the aim of securing the 2nd spot.

Braga has been having a weaker second half of season when compared with what they've achieved in the first but they are never an easy team to face.

In any case I expect a win and a good display to warm up the masses (more than 30,000 expected tonight) for the big game on Thursday.

Here is the starting XI for the game that is about to start:

Rui Patrício
Abel - Tonel - Polga - Grimi
Miguel Veloso
Farnerud - Izmailov
João Moutinho
Liedson - Yannick Djaló

Subs: Tiago, Pedro Silva, Gladstone, Ronny, Adrien, Pereirinha, Vukcevic and Romagnoli

Once again Farnerud is a void in our midfield and we are suffering because of that. I hope that PB sees that and brings on Pereirinha or Vukcevic asap.

Great great Yannick! 4 goals in 3 matches since he returned from his lenghty injury showing how useful he still can be to us and to Portugal.

And great Liedson that with two goal assists, once again, solved.

2-0 HT

We had a poor first half an hour mainly due to the inactivity of Farnerud and quite honestly also to the absence of Romagnoli. El Pipi, even when out of form, is so much better than 95% of all the midfielders of our league and our midfield obviously feels his absence.

Fortunately quality and talent is something that we do not lack of in our squad and it was the great Yannick Djaló, with a little help from Liedson, that decided to open the book and score twice with a bang.

Still, I'd like to see either Pereirinha or Vukcevic coming in to replace the bland Swede. We need to pay back Braga the score of the away game.

First substitution for us: Vukcevic in for Izmailov. Nice.

Braga has been much more dangerous than us in this 2nd half which is not really surprising as the cruise control was set after the 2-0.

Meanwhile, PB brings in Pereirinha for the place of the great Djaló.

Polga apparently pulled a muscle and is immediately subbed by Gladstone. Hopefully is nothing serious.

Vukcevic sees a yellow and that means he will be suspended in our next league game (home against Leixões)

Farnerud has actually been one of our best players in the second half, so...förlåt Pontus!

2-0 FT

Not a pretty game from our side but that was not what we needed. We needed 3 points and a quite game, and that's what we had.

Sporting played really well today, and for once(p) I felt some calls were unfairly against you guys.

Joao Moutinho was excellent again today, what an all around perfect player. The second best midfielder in our league after Lucho obviously, but the sky is the limit for this boy. The organization and tactical knowledge he displays as the game progresses is a tremendous, rare asset. I love this little guy.

On another note, boy oh boy Stelvio can't hit the backside of a barn. Brutal accuracy!

Assalto à Champions
by Mário Duarte in O Jogo

***

A Estrela: Yannick Djaló (4/5)
