PL R12: SPORTING 1-1 União Leiria; Alvalade, 02.12.2007

Although being a game against the team currently last in the league table, the pressure is high on this game after a series of bad results. If we do what is our obligation and beat Leiria, we will reduce to only 3 points the difference for the 2nd and will keep watching the self-crowned champions.

According to O Jogo, this may be the XI chosen by Paulo Bento for the game starting at 20h15 CET:

Rui Patrício
Abel - Tonel - Polga - Had
João Moutinho - Miguel Veloso
Izmailov - Romagnoli - Vukcevic
Liedson

Subs: Tiago, Gladstone, Adrien Silva, Farnerud, Pereirinha, Celsinho, Purovic.

I guess he was talking directly to his players and I also think that if we go through the "coaches with lame excuses" path, there is a certain señor that could give lectures to all the other coaches of our league in that aspect.

Abel just made a classless play.

After a two footed challenge from behind, he gets the ball and immediately tries to take the throw-in while a player is writhing around in pain. All the Leiria players were yelling at him, and even Polga told him to cut it out and stop.

Abel never ceases to amaze... a careless, chaotic player who injures people and shows no sportsmanship.

Liedson has missed 2 absolute sitters thus far. Sporting should be winning.

1-1 final.

Polga missed a penalty, and Leiria scored 10 minutes later. Paulo Bento's suggestion of there being no more excuses will apply here; Polga missed the chance to secure the three points.

Filipe, what are your thoughts on Sporting being unable to beat the worst team in the league at home?

Sporting had one of the poorest displays so far this season and this result practically took away from us the already slim hopes we had of fighting for the title.

It's not easy to point out what exactly is wrong at the moment with the team but certainly I am not one of those that immediately likes to jump on the "waving white handkerchief" waggon that see in Paulo Bento the main responsible for this situation. No, he is not the main responsible for this situation and I sincerely hope that our Board keep their backbone and leave the man do his job with...tranquilidade.

To be realistic we should now be targetting the 2nd spot as our real objective for this season, apart from the other 3 competitions where we are still involved.

Com muita... intranquilidade
by João Sanches
in O Jogo
