PL R1: SPORTING 4-1 Académica; Alvalade, 17.08.2007

Sporting will have the honour to kick-off the 2007/08 edition of the Portuguese League playing home against Académica de Coimbra this Friday evening.

Here is a few stuff translated from today's O Jogo about that game as well as about the way we have started the league in the last few years.

It's a 31 for the students
by António Bernardino, translated from O Jogo
15.08.2007

If football was ruled by the student "arts", it would be possible to imagine Académica getting hold of any kind of trickery, technically designed as memory aids, to better remember the best formula to hold Liedson. This because the team from Coimbra, the first opponent of Sporting at the start of the 2007/08 edition of the Bwin Liga, is "only" the favourite target of the Lions' forward, in what concerns our domestic football, having already suffered eight goals in four seasons.

In the League or in the Cup, the striker from Bahia has been a real 31 for Pedro Roma, that only twice came out approved from the exams in front of Liedson. In fact, Briosa's goalkeeper is the number one on the list of those more fustigated by the Lions' striker, although he have managed to leave Alvalade twice without suffering any goal by his "black beast".

With a Sporting vs Académica booked for next Friday, in Alvalade, we expect another duel between Liedson and Roma. One more opportunity for Sporting's goleador to increase his tally faing Briosa, but also for Pedro Roma, on the other side, to try and reach a positive mark in front of the goals "teacher". In the two ocasions that Liedson did not manage to beat the students' goalkeeper, the Lions also did not win those games for the League. They happened both in Alvalade (2004/05 and 2005/06), with a draw (0-0) and a defeat (0-1), respectively.

In conclusion, in the nine games against Académica in the last four seasons - adding the games for the League and for Taça de Portugal -, Liedson failed the students seven times, with eight goals scored.

Liedson scored two against Gil Vicente in 2004/05

In the four seasons that he already counts in Portugal - he arrived in Alvalade in 2003/04 -, Liedson only once managed to score in the opening game of the League. It happened in the 2004/05 season, against Gil Vicente, in a game where he scored two of the three goals with which Sporting beat the team from Barcelos (3-2). A decisive contribution of the number 31, on a night where he managed to add the fact of being involved in the other Lions' goal, pressing Marcos António, a player of Gil Vicente, in a move where the Brazilian defender ended up introducing the ball in his own net. Regarding the other seasons, he did not partiipate on the start of the 2003/04 season - he arrived before the third round, whereas on the other seasons he "loaned" his goalscoring credits to Rogério and Deivid (2005/06), and to Nani and Deivid (2006/07). Nevertheless, having in mind the tradition with Briosa and the form demonstrated by the Baiano during the pre-season, Académica is a target...with more charm.

Heroes at the start

1985/86
Five of “Manel”

Doing justice to his condition of goleador, Manuel Fernandes (the real one!) started the season scoring five goals, on a 6-0 victory over Penafiel. The captain was inspired and destroyed the enemy.

2001/02
Niculae decides

He was one of the last reinforcements to arrive and one of those that created more expectations, taking advantage of the first game of the season, against F Porto, to conquer the fans with a triumphant goal.

2006/07
Glorious Deivid

He was never very much loved in Alvalade, but he left through the big door, thanks to two goals against Boavista, on a game where he jumped from the bench to solve the situation. Afterwards he went to Fenerbahçe.

Vilains at the start

1978/79
Short Pavic

Milorad Pavic started the League without managing to guide the team towards victory against Boavista. 0-2 loss, in what was a bad omen for a disapointing season.

1998/99
Duscher sent-off

A useless gesture lead Duscher to be sent-off, during the second half of the game against Setúbal, when the team was fighting to score after the draw, and thus became the vilain.

1995/96
Amunike “traitor”

Sporting started winning in the old Antas Stadium, but the sending off of Amunike...and the goals of Domingos (2) did not allow the team to score any point.

Looked at Academica's roster and bar Litos, never heard of one of their players names , so I assume it'll be an easy night for the pride of Lisbon, right?

In football nothing is easy but with a packed stadium we just have to do what we know best...

After a pre-season that never reached heights of excitement, Sporting last weekend played enough to beat the champions and win the first trophy of the season and last night started the league in great style almost looking like we were watching the exact same team that did a fantastic streak during the last third of last season.

Am I surprised? Not really. Paulo Bento, very well backed by Sporting's Board, did what seems until now to be a great job in identifying a group of quality players that not only replaced those 4 regulars of last year's first XI that left but also came to add some more depth to a squad that needed it. It is true that this season barely started and there is no reason to start singing victory chants but it is also true that this team is currently on an absolutely fantastic streak of 26 official games without knowing defeat, having won 20 of those!

Yesterday's game was similar to many of those won by PB's team. Académica started well, organised and showing some good players but as soon as Sporting turned the turbo on, the game changed dramatically. That first goal was pure quality attacking football and that was enough to turn the game in our favour. The final score was quite generous towards the team from Coimbra such was the festival of missed chances by the Lions. At a certain point it almost looked like Liedson was feeling sorry for Grandaddy Pedro Roma, the oldest player of our league. p

Our defense had an overall good game, although Stojkovic was a bit hesitant on the cross that gave origin to Académica's goal. He would end up compensating that with a good save from a shot that could have given a very undeserved 2nd goal to the students. Abel was the best in the back four showing probably that he is passing through his best period so far with us.

In the midfield the magic roundabout did wonders with Miguel Veloso having another imperial match, Simon Vukcevic doing all he could to make us forget about Izmailov and almost managing it (especially with that fantastic move at 68' when he left three defenders dizzy), Romagnoli taking good care of the number 10 spot and finally Joăo Moutinho being the best in the middle with an unstoppable display of energy and positive football.

Upfront it happened what many of us were starting to guess that could happen sooner or later. O Levezinho and O Ninja connected and that might mean that if a display like the one of yesterday will be repeated several times this season we may be witnessing the return to this club's tradition of having a dazzling attacking duo and not only a lone striker. Liedson had an incredible amount of great goal chances and most part of them were created by the intense hard work of his partner upfront.

What about DERLEI? Well he was "only" the Man of the Match for me. Like someone already said in one of yesterday's papers, he did more in one game yesterday than he did in half of a season last year. One can see in the way he moves and runs that he is totally up for it and that is how we remember that player that helped giving two European trophies to the Portuguese football not so long ago.
Welcome back Ninja!

Next Sunday we are playing again against the title holders, this time at their stadium. Let's hope we show the same composure we've done so far and that we can leave that place with the same feeling that we've left last season.

Thanks for posting those clips Filipe! Looks like we have a lot of momentum at the moment. From what I saw of some preseason games we have the raw talent to challenge this year. I must say that Paulo Bento is a fantastic coach who has a good eye for talent and is mixing the youth with the veterans very well.

btw: I don't think Stojkovic could have done much about that goal...Abel gave him too much space.

Overall excellent result...we just need to keep doing EXACTLY what we are doing when go to das Antas next week.

Forca Sporting

The grass is always greener on the other side

After he left Porto he had loads of problems adapting to the Russian football (who hasn't?) and last season he returned to our league during the January transfer window to play for you know who. It's never easy for a player to quickly adapt coming in mid-season and that is even more difficult when that player was months without proper playing time like it was his case. Adding to this the SF "Santos Factor", which is a safe ingredient for failure, and you have a disappointing 6 months.

Now, give him a proper pre-season, a good and healthy working environment and good players to play with and there you have the real Ninja on top again.

thats BS and u know it

he was given way more chances last season than he worked for to deserve them....did u watch his games? other than collecting yellow cards, fooling opponents left and right and missing open goals, he did nothing

ah ok...he scored for us once in the last game

his failure with us is due to him and him alone

im still glad u landed him btw

Oh sorry...for a moment I forgot that I was talking about The Untouchables. :rollani:

No, it is not BS, it's my opinion and I'd expect a bit more from you to contradict it than simply saying what people say on the tascas of our lovely country.

Facts:
Derlei played in 12 league games of your club last season, coming in as a sub in 7, starting and being subbed in 4 and only playing the 90' in one match which gives an average of 43' per game...and guess what? He scored in the only complete match that he did , of course. He got 2 yellow cards which is hardly a show of terrible disciplinary problems.

i actually have a theory about derlei, IF ( and i stress the IF...because it wont happen ) derlei does have a decent performance this season, it will be solely due to the fact that he cut his hair and got rid of that michael jackson wannabe hairdo
