OMT: SPORTING 4-0 Marítimo; Alvalade, 13.04.07 - PL Round 25

After the brilliant and hard fought win in Braga we're back at home to play against the always tough opposition of Marítimo. From now on there is not much to calculate, all the 6 games left are there to be won and that is what we need to do tonight.

Paulo Bento will probably not make any change in the first XI of the game in Braga so this will most likely be our starting line-up:

Ricardo
Abel - Caneira - Polga - Tello
Miguel Veloso
Nani - João Moutinho
Romagnoli
Yannick Djaló - Liedson

subs: Tiago, Miguel Garcia, Ronny, Tonel, Custódio, Farnerud, Bruno Pereirinha and Alecsandro.

Should be a win for Sporting, but Marcinho and Mbesuma can wreak havoc at times. If Bento's boys can get an early goal, it should be a comfortable win but Maritimo always grows in confidence throughout the games. Gregory will need to be immense at the back. Should be a good game to watch.

A few historical notes about this game translated from Sporting's official website:

- The football teams of Sporting and Marítimo faced each other for the first time on 14 October 1913, on a friendly match. The game was played at Campo Grande, and the Lions won 2-0, with goals scored by Joaquim Alves and António Neves Vital.

- The first time that Sporting hosted Marítimo, at an official level, was on 11 June 1933, for the quarter finals of the Portuguese Championship (the first format of our Cup). Surprisingly, the Madeira team won by 1-0, but the Lions would continue in the competition, has they'd won the first leg 3-1.

- On the first round of 82/83, António Oliveira had his debut as Sporting's coach, the same happening with the striker Hamilton. The Lions won, 1-0, with a goal by Virgílio.

- At the 10th round of 85/86, on Sporting's victory by 3-0, the Englishman Raphael Meade scored his first goal to the sportinguistas. Manuel Fernandes scored the other two.

- On a game counting for the 24th round in 97/98, it was debut time for the Lions' offensive midfielders Edmilson and Ivo Damas. The final score was a 1-1 draw, with Oceano scoring for Sporting.

- At the 9th round of 98/99, a 2-0 win. Nuno Valente scored his first and only goal in official matches for Sporting. The other goal was scored by Iordanov.

All-Time scores of SPORTING-Marítimo for the League:

77/78 – 3-0 93/94 – 1-1
78/79 – 1-0 94/95 – 2-0
79/80 – 4-1 95/96 – 2-0
80/81 – 3-1 96/97 – 3-0
82/83 – 1-0 97/98 – 1-1
85/86 – 3-0 98/99 – 2-0
86/87 – 6-1 99/00 – 4-2
87/88 – 0-1 00/01 – 1-0
88/89 – 2-2 01/02 – 4-0
89/90 – 1-0 02/03 – 2-0

91/92 – 2-1 04/05 – 0-1
92/93 – 3-2 05/06 – 1-1

Liedson goal not even 30 seconds in.

Like I said, an early Sporting goal and this one's over.

2-0 at half time in another very good first half from Sporting. Liedson made a blitz goal right at the start and that obviously changed the face of the match.

Olberdam should be already taking a shower as this is football and not karate.

Let's hope we manage to score the 3rd early enough to save some energies for the Cup semi final on Wednesday.

4-0 FT

A very good game by Sporting without ever needing to put the foot on the pedal. The keeper Marcos was probably their best player and that says a lot. Great Liedson! One goal, two assists and a permanent working ant all over the pitch.

Sporting is probably at this stage playing its best football so far in this season. The team is clearly full of trust and the young age of many of our key players is only influencing our style of play in a positive way.

Yesterday the game was obviously marked by the fastest goal so far in this League, scored by Liedson after less than 11 seconds! :eekani: However I don't think we would have had many problems in easily winning this match even if the first goal would have taken a little bit longer to go in. Our domination was overwhelming and if not for the great display of Marítimo's keeper Marcos we could have registered an even bigger rout.

A special note to Caneira (very safe), Tello (immense during the whole match) and the usual magic duo Nani and João Moutinho.

The Man of the Match was with no doubt, Liedson What a great player this man is! He not only scores and assists with the regularity that we all know but he also works permanently for the team, recovering the ball over and over again and even going back defending when needed.

Now let's get ourselves qualified for Jamor as I want to spend that late May Sunday afternoon in Estádio Nacional

Great win for Sporting. Would be fantastic if they could end up winning the league this year. I´m very impressed by this young team. I know i have asked about it before, but are there any possibilities of posting some player ratings? If you mean the media does a crappy job with the ratings, maybe you could post your own ratings? It gives a good picture for those who don´t get to see the matches.

As there is not much left to play in this season I might do that at the start of the next one.
