OMT: SPORTING 3-1 Est. Amadora; Alvalade, 10.03.07 - PL Round 21

"Stars" on our side

by Pedro Hélder Maia
09.03.2007
Transl. from www.sporting.pt

In spite of a clear advantage in the total score of the receptions of Estrela da Amadora, it is obvious that many times Sporting finds problems in this match, having even registered six negative results in 13 games (3 draws and 3 defeats).

It didn't start well the history of these games, with a 0-1 defeat in 88/89, Vítor Damas was then the interim coach in a very troubled season - he replaced Pedro Rocha and would be replaced by Manuel José, and the last souvenirs are also negative, with 0-1 last season, in what was the first defeat of Paulo Bento as coach of the Lions. Liedson missed a penalty right at the end of the match. Meanwhile there were some great games by Sporting as host of the tricolores.

At the 12th round of 1995/96, for example, the Lions won 6-2 on a game full of emotions. Carlos Queiroz lead the green and white team, who scored by Sá Pinto (2), Oceano, Pedro Barbosa, Amunike and Pedro Martins, on his first official goal for Sporting.

A similar goal difference - the biggest in this match - happened on April 2004, with a 4-0 win, the last so far. In that game the star was Liedson, who signed a hat-trick, being the other goal scored by the Romanian Niculae.

Other clear wins happened in 1993/94, 3-0 with a brace of Iordanov and a goal of Capucho and in 1998/99, also 3-0 then with goals by Edmilson, Iordanov and Leandro.

The other ocasions where the Lions were able to celebrate a victory happened in 89/90, 2-0 with goals by Gomes and Edel - the first and only goal scored by this striker at the service of the club, and 90/91, 1-0 with a goal scored by Oceano and 2000/01, also 1-0 by João Pinto.

In conclusion, this is a match in which, in spite of being clearly favourite and of its supporters not expecting nothing less than a win, Sporting's "stars" will have to be at their highest level to justify their worth.

Iordanov and Liedson, both with 3 goals, are the best scorers in the history of this game, being in the current squad the Brazilian striker the only player that already scored against Estrela.

i thought bento was going to start djalo...

i reckon he wants to see if certain players will try to justify their wages

Apart from understanding what was the intention behind sportugal's publication of the pay sheet of our players I don't think that at the end of the day that was such a bad thing. Actually I feel that anybody should have the right to know what anybody else earns as it happens for example in this country where I live.

totally agree, we have this tabu over wages, simply because its a great way for employers to pay crap to their employees

on what relates to footy..well its got a lot to do with the issue of taxes, as usual

After a great 1st half so far by Sporting João Moutinho put the cherry on top of the cake of a great season and of his 70th consecutive league game for Sporting

Complete domination by Sporting. I think the corner kicks are like 9-0 for the lions.

Anderson Polga has been IMMENSE. What a player.

8-0 in corners, 2-0 in balls on the post (both by Romagnoli), 1-0 in goals and a huge advantage in terms of football...Liedson? who's he?

just as i was about to say this game reminded me of ours with boavista ( romagnoli touching the iron twice, plus several other missed chances)...but then the impossible happens...moutinho scores and so far its 3-0...bah

good to see djalo scoring though, will be of use next week

5 minutes from time Estrela reduces to 3-1 with a goal by a guy that should have been sent off a long time ago.

3-1 (FT)

Sporting's first half was probably the best I've seen so far this season which is quite promising for next week's game.

Liedson was right...they can solve it without me

I'm afraid you'll need a better performance than that at the Dragao.

Seriously though, good game by Sporting, especially the first half as you said Filipe. Djalo was great too, he should be ahead of Bueno and Alecsandro on the depth chart every week.
