Sporting became today national champion in both men and women, confirming the indications given in Pombal on the first round, when the club was leading both competitions.

In the male competition, the Lions won their 13th consecutive title (!) with one point advantage over Benfica (64 against 63), after having closed the first day with a difference of two points.

Atletismo: Naide de ouro nos Europeus
in MaisFutebol
03.03.2007

1- Ouro: Naide Gomes (Portugal), 6,89 m
2- Prata: Concepcion Montaner (Espanha), 6,69 m
3- Denisa Scerbova (Rep. Checa), 6,64 m

Lions vice-champions of the Cup Of European Champions:
Francis Obikwelu and Rui Silva conquered two victories

Translated from Record
27.05.2007

Sporting became vice-champion of the Group A of the Cup of European Club Champions in Athletics, that happened this weekend in Albufeira, with victories of Luch Moscow in both categories (men and women).

The Lions reached in this way their best result since their win in 2000, at Vila Real de Santo António.

Sporting had once again Francis Obikwelu in great form (he won the 200 metres race in 20,93 seconds), while Rui Silva guaranteed the other win (on 3000 metres) of the second round.

"It was a bit hard for me, after yesterday's races. I had a pain on my knee and I didn't want to risk too much but I ended up making an extra effort to be able to win", said the Luso-Nigerian, that considered to be "positive" the second place obtained by Sporting in the tournament.

According to Rui Silva, who concluded the 3000 metres in 8.02.92 minutes: "It was a different story: I have tried to keep concentrated to avoid being attacked by surprise and I've managed to strike well in the last lap."

Special notice also for the second place of Mário Teixeira, on the 3000 metres steeplechase, with 8.45,08 minutes, after the Fenerbahçe athlete, Halil Akkas.

Final Table - Men:

1. Luch Moscovo (Russia) 110
2. SPORTING CP (Portugal) 84
3. Puma Chapin Jerez (Spain) 84
4. Fiamme Gialle Roma (Italy) 77
5. Spartak Dubnica (Slovakia) 74
6. Fenerbahçe (Turkey) 69
7. Belgrave Harriors (England) 59

Obikwelu elected the best European athlete of the month in June
Translated from A Bola
12.07.2007

Francis Obikwelu was elected by the European Federation of Athletics (EAA) the best athlete in the «Old Continent» in the month of June, receiving 23 per cent of the voting from the public and the Athletics press.

He won three out of four competitions during this month and was only beaten at the Oslo meeting, where, even so, he reached the best European mark of the year in 100 metres.

Special notice for the fact that Obikwelu, European Athlete of the year in 2006, becomes the second Portuguese to win this monthly distinction in the current year, after the also Sporting athlete Naide Gomes in March.

Parabéns Francis!

Sporting dominates the 2008 Portuguese Athletics Championships
Translated from www.sporting.pt
09.09.2008

Sporting's athletics male and female teams won the Portuguese Championship, after winning in Faro the respective divisions. It was the seventh consecutive win for the men - it could have been the 14th, if it wasn't for the unexpected disqualification of the Lions in 2001 - and the 14th (!!!) consecutive for the women.

On a season where the lack of a track complicated the daily work of athletes and coaches, this was a victory filled with will power, work and sacrifice, on a perfect weekend for the Lions who, even without the help of the wind - complicated very much the athlete's performances - managed to beat their opponents, in almost all disciplines.

In the female competition, the win was assured very early, as all the competition was, as long as the different disciplines advanced, left behind and, in the end, the second placed FC Porto, ended 28 points away, while JOMA, the thrord placed, ended the tournament with less than two thirds of the points won by the Lionesses.

In the male tournament, the Alvalade club's win was also impressive, leaving the second placed, benfica, at 14,5 points of the hepta-champions. It's important to notice that the male team is still without Rui Silva and that Francis Obikwelu only participated in the 100m and in the 4x100m relay, leaving the 200m race to Arnaldo Abrantes who guaranteed another clean victory.

Male
Final Table:

1.ş Sporting, 153 pts.
2.ş Benfica, 138,5
3.ş FC Porto, 101

Female
Final table:

1.ş Sporting, 153 pts.
2.ş FC Porto, 125,3
3.ş JOMA, 92,4

Once again Sporting Clube de Portugal's athletes take Portugal's name to the top of the world sports elite.

In the European Indoor Athletics Championships which happened in Paris last weekend, Francis Obikwelu became European Champion of 60 metres and Naide Gomes won the silver medal in Long Jump missing gold by only one centimetre.
