OMT: SPORTING 2-1 Rio Ave; Alvalade, 21.01.2007, 1/16 Finals, Portuguese Cup

Football is back on a Sunday afternoon like in the good old days when not all games were shown on tv which meant that if you wanted to know what was going on in your team's game you had either to go to the stadium or to listen to it on the radio.

Nothing better than the Cup to bring back football where it belongs and in this 5th round Sporting is hosting Rio Ave FC, a team currently playing in Liga de Honra but that already have an history in our top flight football. They are placed in 23rd in the all time table of 68 clubs that played in our First Division/League. Rio Ave are currently 6th, with 22 points in 15 games, having scored 20 goals (3rd best attack in LH) and conceded 19.

According to A Bola this is our starting line-up for the game starting at 18h00 CET (Bruno Pereirinha will also be on the bench):

2-0 at half time. Sporting is doing one of his best games of the season so far and Romagnoli seems to be wanting to leave with a bang.

Romagnoli OUT > Bruno Pereirinha IN
Big appaluse in Alvalade for both, probably in the last game of El Pipi for us.

Just before this, business as usual in Alvalade...some s.o.b. from Rio Ave has a leg chopping tackle over João Moutinho and the ref doesn't even give the foul. :rollani:

Cross the river slowly
Victory of the Lions justified by the good first half.
Rio Ave never surrendered.

by Jean-Paul Lares
Translated from O Jogo
22.01.2007

Sporting beat Rio Ave, assuring its continuation on the Taça de Portugal, thanks to the good football played in the first half. The Lions entered the game in a very solid way, even if the men of Vila do Conde had the courage to face them head held high, always trying to challenge its opponents.

Paulo Bento bet on the return of Nani, gave the offensive midfielder position to Romagnoli and put Alecsandro side by side with Liedson, but it was the collective effort that allowed the superiority showed in the first half.

With the exception of a clear goal chance of Evandro, wasted on the 6th minute - that could have changed the story of the match -, it were always the hosts to create the biggest danger. It was, however, with the precious help of Ricardo Jorge that the football domination became clear on the score board: Rio Ave's defender tried to avoid that Alecsandro coul tap the ball in the derted goal, but ended up scoring an own goal (20'), leaving injured from that action.

As if wanting to prove that the first goal did not come by pure chance, Sporting accelerated and, nine minutes later, following an excellent work by the same Alecsandro, Liedson confirmed his status of "matador", scoring the second.

We then witnessed to the best period of Paulo Bento's men, that managed even to present a beautiful football, that has been absent lately. Even so, it should be highlighted the reaction of the visitors, as the men of João Eusébio did not accuse the goals conceded.

The second half of the game was a mirror of that, even because Sporting took the foot from the pedal. If Bruno Pereirinha came in for Romagnoli, and Yannick Djaló replaced Alecsandro, it was a substitution operated by the visiting coach that had an immediate effect in the match: Fábio Coentrão left his place for Keita, and, on his first intervention, the Senegalese forward signed a superb goal, with a powerful shot 25 metres from the goal (75'). The decision of the qualifier was again in stake, but, in the final stage of the match, Rio Ave did not menace Tiago one single time.
In conclusion, a fair but well fought victory.
