Sporting's Internationals

Here is a thread for everything related with Sporting players that represented their main National Team.

Let's start with Tonel, who can debut as a first level international very soon...

Tonel: "Sporting opens many doors"

Translated from A Bola
10 Nov 2006

Tonel admits that he was caught by surprise with the call to the Selecção. The centre back, who "was not expecting" to be part of Scolari's choices, considers that the vote of confidence is explained through his performances, but also with the fact that he represents a club with the dimension of Sporting.

"The fact of representing a club like Sporting open many doors, we have extraordinary conditions to grow as players. There is good work at all levels and that helped my evolution.", underlines Tonel on an interview to Sporting's official website. "Mister" Scolari is, now, giving me a chance and I will do everything to grab it. I will work as much as I can, always with the aim of contributing for the best of the group. I don't know if I will be used, but I am already very grateful for this chance", added.

For a long time pointed out as one of the players that deserved to be called for the work of the "Quinas" team, Tonel recalls that "other opportunities have passed", so it was with surprise that he got the good news: "It was a great surprise. I was not at all waiting to be called to the National Team. Other chances had gone and, for that, I was not waiting for this. I am very happy. It was really a big surprise".

---------------------------------------

Congrats Tonel for your deserved call!

Anderson Polga, the only world champion that ever played for a Portuguese club, commented today the call to the Portuguese NT of his partner at the centre of Sporting's defense...

Polga happy for his colleague in defense:
"Tonel already deserved to be in the National Team"

World Champion wants to win titles with the Lion's jersey

by António Bernardino
Translated from O Jogo
10.11.2006

Polga expressed a strong satisfaction for the fact that Tonel was called by Luiz Felipe Scolari for the game of next Wednesday with Kazakhstan. The debut of the Lions' centre back amongst the chosen few of Felipão is seen as a fair prize to someone that has been having an excellent career in Alvalade: "We were all very happy. This is a chance that he already deserved, although it's Scolari the one to decide. Everybody in the squad congratulated him, even because his call gives more value to the group. It's one more proof that the work that we've been doing is well done. Furthermore, that is obvious, not only due to Tonel's call but also the one of several other players. That is a joy for all of us and an honour for the club."

Confronted with the fact that Sporting has many international players in his squad, Polga does not see that as a problem, but rather as an advantage: "It is always good, for any club, to have international players. It is something gratifying for the team, as it gives more value to what we have been doing throughout the season. Apart from that, it also means that Sporting's players have been rewarded for the work done at the club."

Being, today, a player very cherished by the Lions' supporters, Polga stresses that he feels very well in Alvalade and has no intention to leave so soon: "I always felt happy for being at Sporting. I feel very well here; only the titles are missing. That is what we like most. And I want to win them, but here, as this is a club with whom I identify myself and that I love very much."

Sporting is the most represented club in the call made by Scolari for the double tie of our NT.
João Moutinho, Nani, Marco Caneira and Ricardo were called to face Belgium (in Alvalade on March 24th) and Serbia (in Belgrade on March 28th) for the qualifiers of Euro 2008.

At the same time Rodrigo Tello was also called by the Chilean NT coach for the friendly that this country will play against Brazil here in Gothenburg on March 24th.

The same thing happening with Carlos Paredes who was again called to represent Paraguay in the two friendlies that his country will play against Mexico on March 25th and Colombia on March 28th.

News from Sporting players representing their National Team today...

Here in Gothenburg Rodrigo Tello only played the last 12' for Chile on their crush defeat against a great looking Brazil (0-4). A shame as Chile had 3 or 4 dangerous free kicks that could have been used in a better way by Mr Cañonazo in comparison to what was done by the pityful Mark González.

In Seoul, Uruguay beat South Korea 2-0 and guess who scored both goals of La Celeste? Yes! Bueeeeenoooooo! After 2 years of absence from his country's NT, what a way to celebrate his return from "El Loco"

Tonight 3 Sporting players were capped in the smashing of Belgium (4-0). Ricardo was practically a spectator, Nani played around 20 minutes but that was enough to give nightmares to the Belgian defenders and João Moutinho was, only, the best player on the pitch. An amazing game by our giant that probably left Scolari wondering what to do in the next game.

All this in Alvalade, a stadium where Portugal only won until now: Spain (1-0), Holland (2-1) both on Euro 2004, Russia (7-1) on the qualifiers for the WC06 and now this

Leão sobe de forma
BOA RESPOSTA AO SERVIÇO DAS SELECÇÕES

in Record
26.03.2007

Scolari called two Sporting players for the game against Armenia that will be played in one week time counting for the qualifiers of Euro 2008.

João Moutinho repeated his call and Miguel Veloso was called for the first time for the Portuguese first team.

PARABÉNS MIGUEL!

Is this is the least amount of Sporting players called for the NT in quite some time, Filipe?

I don't know but what I do know is that I still prefer seeing Sporting with only one player called and realising that the best players of our NT were all formed in our academy as opposed to have 4 or 5 players called being none of them a home product.

Finally at the age of 28, Sporting's right-back Abel was called by Scolari for the two decisive games of our NT.

A just reward to one of our best players so far this season.
