Transl. from www.sporting.pt
15.09.2006

Paulo Bento called 18 players for the game of the 3rd round of the Portuguese League against Paços de Ferreira. The list of players called did not have any change regarding the game against Inter Milan, which means that, Yannick Djaló might be able to make his debut in the league, after having been suspended for two matches.

List of players called:

Goalkeepers: Ricardo and Tiago;
Defenders: Anderson Polga, Ronny, Marco Caneira, Tonel, Miguel Veloso, Miguel Garcia and Abel.
Midfielders: Rodrigo Tello, Nani, João Moutinho, Romagnoli and João Alves.
Forwards: Liedson, Bueno, Yannick Djaló and Alecsandro.

Goalkeeper makes history in the game with Paços de Ferreira:

RICARDO centenary in green and white

He is the most experienced player of Sporting's current squad.
Counting with the seven seasons at Boavista, Sporting's number one will reach tomorrow 252 games in the league.

by Ricardo Reis
Transl. from O Jogo
15.09.2006

When, tomorrow evening, he enters the pitch, Ricardo will be ready to celebrate an historical mark for Sporting in the main Portuguese league.
Facing Paços de Ferreira, the goalkeeper will complete one hundred games defending the Lions' goal, after having had his debut, in August 2003, with a win over Académica.

Currently on his fourth season in Alvalade, Ricardo adds to the "title" of one of the most ancient players of the squad the access to an even more selected group: the centenary sportinguistas. By completing one hundred matches in the league, the now number one jersey of Alvalade will become the only to hold such honour.

The centenary match of Ricardo for Sporting has, however, other chapters. Before arriving in Alvalade, his experience at Boavista was already long, with the Montijo born player passing the barrier of 250 games in the League. With tomorrow's match - at 21h15 in Alvalade facing Paços de Ferreira –, it will be 252 the games that the Portuguese keeper will have made in the League, where he had his debut in the already distant season of 1994/95, at the then called 2nd Division B, playing for Montijo.

The weight and influence of Ricardo today in Sporting's locker room are undisputed. It was also because of it that, this season, he got from coach Paulo Bento a promotion in Sporting's hierarchy of captains, being him the one keeping the armband in the absence of Custódio.

Portuguese Cup and Europe
More 25 games in other fronts

If one adds to the League games those that Ricardo played, with the lion on his jersey, for the Portuguese Cup and for the UEFA competitions, the numbers will gave to be updated to...125 matches for Sporting. 25 more games, distributed by the second national competition, where he played in three games, and by the European competitions, where he adds 22 other, counting already with the game he played last Tuesday against Inter Milan, that Sporting won 1-0, in the club's return to the Champions League. He was also one of the two players - Caneira was the other - already experienced in the main European club competition.

Bento will change Europe's XI:
Caneira might be replaced by Ronny

by João Lopes and Vanda Cipriano
Tranls. from Record.pt
16.09.2006

Paulo Bento will make some changes to the first XI that beat Inter Milan. The guarantee was given by the coach himself. A situation that one could guess, even to avoid the fatigue of some players on a time that the options are reduced to 18 players. Furthermore, this was a strategy followed between the matches with Nacional and Inter.

For today, although Paulo Bento guarantees that he will not "make many changes", the most certain will be that Marco Caneira, the hero of the European night, will be on the bench.

The player broke his right hand and, although available to play, he will have to do so with a bandage. With this scenario, it's probable that Ronny will return to the left side of the defense, existing also the possibility that, on the opposite side, Abel leave his place again to Miguel Garcia.

In the midfield, Miguel Veloso, Moutinho and Nani seem to have their places assured and one of the doubts is linked with the name of the man that will occupy the position behind the two strikers. Romagnoli might rest and, if this possibility will happen, the coach might call Yannick Djaló to that function, as it happened in the final stage of the match for the Champions League - "He could do it against Inter, we will see if he can do it with Paços de Ferreira”, said the coach, on that issue. Moutinho is, obviously, another possibility for that post, what would brig Tello has a bet for the left side.

In front, the continuation of the pair of strikers (Liedson and Yannick Djal&#243 is the most certain possibility, but it shouldn't be excluded the chance of seeing Alecsandro making his debut has a starter.

Sporting 0-1 Paços de Ferreira (HT)

Yes, it's true, Sporting played badly in the first half, the defense was sleepy, Romagnoli not doing enough for the maestro role and Alecsandro was very heavy and slow.

However the last 3 minutes of this first half are absolutely unbelievable. The goal from Paços was clearly scored with the left hand of Ronny and immediately after there is an even more clear penalty over João Moutinho that the ref transforms into a couple of yellow cards to our players. Amazing stuff.

Anyway, we turned the game with Boavista so why not doing it again? Let's see Yannick Djaló in the place of Alecsandro and get the 3 points!

0-1 FT

Sporting should have done better in the 1st half.

The bus was parked as expected and even there was time for a second penalty for us that the ref did not see.

At the end of the season we will see if this theft will be important or not.

should I make a poll with a few options about what Romagnoli must be thinking about the ref?

«Lion» falls with a fake goal

Transl. from A Bola
16.09.2006

Controversial game in Alvalade. Paços de Ferreira beat Sporting, 1-0, with a goal by Ronny scored with his hand. After a weak first half, the "Lions" were wasteful in the second half, losing several clear goal chances. Peçanha, Paços' keeper, was the man of the match.

Sporting have reasons to complain about the refereeing, not only because of the goal but also for two penalties that should have been granted, over João Moutinho, at the end of the first half, and over Liedson, at the end of the second.

But the bad refereeing of the trio lead by João Ferreira - who was also noted last week after his work at the game Boavista-Benfica - should not take the merit to the way Paços de Ferreira played. This because José Mota's team showed up in Alvalade playing without complexes, using good organisation and discipline has weapons to make Sporting's life very hard. The "Lions", on the contrary to the game with Inter Milan, showed a slow football, without imagination and for that reason creating very little danger to the opposite goal.

Nevertheless, even if on a very aciddental way, Sporting was close to scoring at the 28th minute, when a defender saved on the goal line, after a corner of Miguel Veloso. The same player was involved on another dangerous play, after seeing Peçanha saving his shot at the top corner of his goal after a direct free kick.

It would be already on added time that Paços would reach the goal, on an irregular way. Ronny, coming from the second post in the sequence of a corner, handed the ball with his left arm putting inside the net. Ricardo protested, all Sporting protested, but the referee João Ferreira, without any sign from his assistant, validated a scandalous goal.

Before half time there was still time for another polemic situation inside Paços de Ferreira's box, between Mangualde and João Moutinho. The Sporting midfielder was pushed from behind but João Ferreira did nothing.

Paulo Bento changed the squad for the second half and Sporting became another team. The entries of Ronny and Djaló for the places of the bleak Miguel Garcia and Romagnoli brought the speed that the green and white game did not know so far. Alecsandro gave the first warning at 53', when he headed a powerful shot for another great save by Peçanha. The Paços' goalkeeper would shine again a little after, "flying" to save Djaló's shot.

Sporting's pressure was becoming intense and Bueno, who just entered for the place of Alecsandro, was very close to score twice with two headers: the first hit the bar, the second was tipped for a corner, after another brilliant save by the Brazilian keeper.

Until the end of the match there was still time for another controversial situation inside Paços' box, this time with Liedson being fouled. Again a penalty that was not called by the referee. And still for a last goal chance, this time wasted by Tonel. It was written that Sporting wouldn't reach the goal, registering in this way their first defeat of the season.

Of course you are kleber, no doubt about that. Portugal is a wonderful country, everybody has good cars, our football is as clean as a baby's ass and we go on, as PB said yesterday: "whistling as if nothing happened"...

Last week Sporting played well, deserved to win, and although Nani might have fouled his opponent in the play that preceded his amazing goal, only a very stupid and biased person can say that the ref helped us in that occasion. Paraty failed to send off a Nacional player in the middle of the first half and intimidated our players with ridiculous yellow cards early on the game.

I was actually thinking yesterday, after reading the usual comments from fans of your team and FêCêPê on the foruns of football websites, that at least people in XT are intelligent enough not to compare what happened last week to what happened yesterday....obviously I was wrong.

What more there is to say about this game?

Sporting played a weak first half, also due to the effort of last Tuesday, but had two clear goal chances that could have resulted in goal.

Our opponents came organised and willing to go away with one point which is the usual with all but two of the teams that visit us in Alvalade.

In the second half Sporting did enough to score several times against a team that only defended lead by a great goalkeeper, as it also usual with most of the keepers that visit us in Alvalade.

Individually Miguel Veloso was once again brilliant, this time even attacking and João Moutinho had also a very good performance.

It was also great to see the reaction of the players on the interviews after the match, obviously sad and frustrated with what happened but all agreeing that now we should forget about this and go on working to win.

The rest? One fake goal, two non-called penalties, three points vanishing in thin air...that's Portuguese football for you folks!
