OMT: Nacional 0-1 SPORTING - Choupana, Funchal, 09.09.06 - PL Round 2

Vários lesionados levam Paulo Bento a convocar o júnior Yannick Pupo
08.09.2006
in publico.pt

Convocados do Sporting:

Guarda-redes: Ricardo e Tiago.
Defesas: Anderson Polga, Ronny, Marco Caneira, Tonel, Miguel Garcia, Abel e Miguel Veloso.
Médios: Rodrigo Tello, Nani, João Moutinho, Romagnoli, João Alves e Yannick Pupo.
Avançados: Liedson, Bueno e Alecsandro.

Paulo Bento: "This is going to be our first big test"
08.09.2006
transl. from A Bola

Sporting's coach recognises that the trip to Nacional's ground is a "test" to his team's capacities and that on Saturday they will have to put into practice all that they've done during the last 6 weeks to reach the targeted win and consequently grabbing the 3 points.

"We trust in our squad. This is going to be the first big test, where we will have to make prevail the quality of our players. We've had a few normal difficulties to prepare the team due to having had many absent players, but we had six weeks. This is the first moment where we will have to take the profit from what we have invested", said Paulo Bento.

The coach "leonino" also commented the recent news coming from the process "Apito Dourado" [t.n. 'Golden Whistle', the Portuguese version of Calciopoli], where it was known that Paulo Paraty, the referee named for the game with Nacional, harmed Sporting: "I've told you already that I do not comment the nominations of referees. I believe that people always try to do their best. But what it's good for the Portuguese football is to end with this suspicion and to finish with this situation it is necessary to know the truth without fears. No matter who will be hurt with it. What simply cannot go on happening is this constant flow of news after news and everything going on peacefully, as the image that Portuguese football is giving to the world is a very bad one".

amazing stuff by Paraty the ref...some clown from Nacional gives a full blooded tackle with no other intention than hurting our player and after that faces the ref as if he wanted to finish him on the spot...result? yellow card :rollani:

I honestly don't remember the last time Sporting played with such confidence in Madeira.

The game could have been, and to be honest should have been, decided much earlier but the coming game with Inter and some very important absences in the midfield did not help us to kill the game.

In any case it was a solid performance from Sporting with some very good individual performances.

Ricardo was excellent leading a very solid back four.

Miguel Veloso was also impressive in his first game as a starter for the main team of the club, never giving any sign of being nervous or insecure.

João Moutinho was equal to himself and that says it all.

Bueno did probably his best game so far for us showing very good moments of understanding with Liedson that give bright hopes for the future.

Alecsandro had some impressive 20 minutes of debut showing a couple of powerful shots and an impressive physical presence upfront.

However, the MoM was undoubtedly Nani. This kid is on fire and I have the feeling that this is going to be HIS year. Watch out Quaresmazinho, Andersonzinho and all the other zinhos of our League! :fero:
