Zico: "Escutava pela rádio o Sporting"

An interview with Zico, one of the greatest brazilian players of all times, where he talks about his Portuguese roots, the reasons to get Deivid to his new club Fenerbahce and...the good taste of his dad

Zico, o português
”Escutava pela rádio o Sporting”

in Sportugal
by Bruno Pires
03.09.2006

Eu apenas avaliei e autorizei a contratação dele.

Pai, adepto do Sporting

”No último Mundial, Portugal demonstrou a sua força sob o grande comando do meu amigo Felipão e, posso dizer, sou admirador do Figo e do Cristiano Ronaldo.”

Arthur Antunes Coimbra, na primeira pessoa.

Would've been impossible, especially since we had the strike in Mexico anyway... he wouldn't of made a huge difference.

I actually became a fenerli since Zico started coaching your team so what's the big deal about becoming a lion? Have you been by any chance already corrupted by a certain female portuguese XT regular of your club's forum?

Basically Zico says that he knows Deivid since his time in Brazil and he always admired him, that's why he decided to get him to Fenerbahce.

He also says that his father (a Portuguese) used to listen to Sporting's matches on the radio in Brazil and he still remembers that from his childhood.

He has double nationality (Portuguese-Brazilian) and he loves our country.

cool! I hope our deal with Deivid will strengthen the relationship between our clubs.

I think Zico did a great job during the 4 years he's been coaching Japan. He definitely brought another dimension to their game even if they didn't do well in the last World Cup.
Fenerbahce is his first experience as a coach in Europe but if you give him some time I am sure he can do good stuff for you.

Zico: «Going to Lisbon is my dream»
Brazilian wants to coach Sporting

25.04.2007
translated from Record

Arthur Antunes Coimbra, better known as Zico, currently the main coach of the Turkish giants Fenerbahçe, confessed yesterday to the Italian press that his wish for the next season is to coach...Sporting.

"I don't think I will stay here for long. I have a deal for two seasons, but I know very well that, if we will not be champions, they will not want me to continue. Going to Lisbon is my dream", said the former Brazilian international to the magazine Sportweek, a suplement of Gazzetta dello Sport.

It is known that Zico is the son of Portuguese from Tondela and that his father was a big fan of the Lions, just like the former canarinho star: "We used to listen to Sporting matches on the radio..."

I don't think it will happen so soon but it's great to know it.

Nice thread Filipe.

I'm aware Zico's father was portuguese, but now I got to know his team!

Maybe there's a chance he will coach Sporting one day, actually that could be possible if he keeps learning and working hard, achieving results.

So glad he did not follow his father roots in Brazil. I don't know which team he supported, but our arch-rivals Vasco da Gama are the portuguese club on Rio de Janeiro!

Yes, you're right. Zico is having an interesting career as a coach and I wish him all the best in it. We have now for the first time in decades a coach that brought stability to our game therefore I find it hard to see anybody else coming to replace him in the short term but we all know how it is in football...results rule, so maybe Zico one day will have his chance.

Yes, I know that. I've been in Brazil a few years ago and amongst other places spent a few weeks in Nilópolis. Over there I had the chance of meeting many die hard fans of several different teams from Rio and people were always very surprised to realise that me being Portuguese was a flamenguista instead of a vascaíno. Well, the truth is very simple...quem tem Zico tem tudo!

Last sunday Flamengo was trashed by Internacional, the same team Zico won his last trophy with us almost 20 years ago.

The tv showed him as a boy and the pride of his father who couldn't believe his son was a big player with Flamengo, his brazilian team.
