Leõezinhos - Sporting's future stars

Sporting's Youth Academy is the best in Portugal and that is as true as the fact that we have less league titles than our two main rivals.

If we look at Portugal's NTs that are currently competing (U-20 in Toulon and U-19 on the qualifiers for the Euro) or on the verge of starting very important tournaments (U-21 Euro and "A"'s World Cup) this is the list of the 23 international players that are currently playing for us or that have been formed by our club:

U-19 (6 players):
André Marques, André Nogueira, Diogo Tavares, Paulo Renato, Pereirinha and Zezinando (all playing for Sporting currently).

U-20 (2 players):
Mário Felgueiras (on loan at Espinho) and Yannick Djaló (on loan at Casa Pia).

U-21 (7 Players):
João Moutinho, Nani, Custódio (all currently in Sporting), Semedo (on loan at Feirense), Lourenço (on loan at U.Leiria), Varela (on loan at V.Setúbal) and Quaresma (FC Porto).

"A" (8 players):
Ricardo and Marco Caneira (both in Sporting), Luís Figo (Inter Milan), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester Utd), Hugo Viana (Valencia), Luís Boa Morte (Fulham), Nuno Valente (Everton) and Simão Sabrosa (Benfica).

From all these players it seems that Paulo Bento is counting, at least for the pre-season preparation period, to keep the following players in the main team: Ricardo, João Moutinho, Nani, Custódio, André Marques, Zezinando, Yannick Djaló and possibly Mário Felgueiras and Marco Caneira.

Leões batem águias em iniciados
Nuno Reis marcou único golo do encontro
in Record.pt, 20.05.2006

by Jean-Paul Lares, in O Jogo.pt, 26.05.2006

A great player on the make that is on his way to integrate the first team of Sporting already next season.

yes...use some of the money you earned last year in the CL and build your own academy...perhaps like that you will be able to restart having a serious youth policy in your club and stop buying pseudo euro stars that are nothing but rejects

I believe you said the same about Karagounis one year ago...is it a Greek tragedy with novela-like episodes?
