On June 10th, Pinto da Costa announced that Paulo Fonseca signed a two year contract as the new Manager of Futebol Clube do Porto.
Alexandre Rodrigues Fonseca
Date of Birth:
March 5th, 1973 (age 40)
Previous Teams Managed:
Estrela Amadora (youth), Pinhalnovense, Desportivo Aves, Pacos de Ferreira
Paulo Fonseca retired as a player in 2005 after 14 seasons as a central defender, mostly spent in the top two divisons of Portugal with Belenenses, Maritimo, and of course Estrela Amadora. His first managing job was as the youth team manager of Estrela and he held that position for two years.
Fonseca managed minnows Pinhalnovense in the Portuguese Third Division in 2009-10 and led them to the Quarter-Finals of the Portuguese Cup. In 2011-12, he was appointed as manager of Aves, a club in the Portuguese Second Division. He took them to a 3rd place finish, just shy of promotion to the first division.
Last summer, PF was hired as manager of Pacos de Ferreira and led the club to a historic season. The small club finished 3rd in the first division last year and secured European Champions League qualification football for the first time in club history. They finished ahead of clubs such as Braga, Sporting CP, and others.
Paulo Fonseca fits the mould of a Porto manager very well. Portuguese, young, successful with modest clubs, and the capacity to grow and improve with the structure available at Futebol Clube do Porto.
From a tactical perspective, Fonseca is an avid believer in the 4-3-3 and prefers possession football much more than his predecessor in VP. Fonseca's Pacos de Ferreira team were about building up deep in the midfield and opening up speed on the flanks.
