Paulo Fonseca - Manager, Futebol Clube do Porto

On June 10th, Pinto da Costa announced that Paulo Fonseca signed a two year contract as the new Manager of Futebol Clube do Porto.

Name: Paulo Alexandre Rodrigues Fonseca
Date of Birth: March 5th, 1973 (age 40)
Previous Teams Managed: Estrela Amadora (youth), Pinhalnovense, Desportivo Aves, Pacos de Ferreira

Paulo Fonseca retired as a player in 2005 after 14 seasons as a central defender, mostly spent in the top two divisons of Portugal with Belenenses, Maritimo, and of course Estrela Amadora. His first managing job was as the youth team manager of Estrela and he held that position for two years.

Fonseca managed minnows Pinhalnovense in the Portuguese Third Division in 2009-10 and led them to the Quarter-Finals of the Portuguese Cup. In 2011-12, he was appointed as manager of Aves, a club in the Portuguese Second Division. He took them to a 3rd place finish, just shy of promotion to the first division.

Last summer, PF was hired as manager of Pacos de Ferreira and led the club to a historic season. The small club finished 3rd in the first division last year and secured European Champions League qualification football for the first time in club history. They finished ahead of clubs such as Braga, Sporting CP, and others.

Paulo Fonseca fits the mould of a Porto manager very well. Portuguese, young, successful with modest clubs, and the capacity to grow and improve with the structure available at Futebol Clube do Porto.

From a tactical perspective, Fonseca is an avid believer in the 4-3-3 and prefers possession football much more than his predecessor in VP. Fonseca's Pacos de Ferreira team were about building up deep in the midfield and opening up speed on the flanks.

The following two extensive videos show the defensive and attacking organization and approach of Paulo Fonseca's very successful Pacos de Ferreira side last year.

On August 10th, Paulo Fonseca managed his first official game as Manager of Futebol Clube do Porto.

The game was the 2013 Portuguese Supertaca Canadido de Oliveira, pitting last year's league champions against the Cup champions. As Porto won the double, the opponent were the Cup finalists, Vitoria Guimaraes.

With a 3-0 victory, Paulo Fonseca won his first title as manager on the same day that he managed and won his first official Porto game.

Here's to the first of many. Congrats, PF!

You bet

I think for the second time in my life (the first was when they played Bayern in the CL final back in 87), I'll be rooting for Porto in Europe. They say Fonseca will go if they are eliminated, that's why.

This coach is in over his head for sure. Complete idiot but PDC is getting a bit of a free ride. He has completely screwed up this team. He has lost it.

hmm think Porto is on the decline, I dont see PDC's condition getting any better or capacities,

dont see alot of youth coming up either, they will need to do well in the transfer window this summer and hope to sign another mourinho or villas boas..

Yeah, it was a poor choice and it's time for him to go. VP wasn't a great manager, but he had balls and ended up as a two-time champion.

SCP - I disagree, the youth is there. Porto B is in 1st place in the second division with a boat load of young talent, similar to Sporting B last year who then promoted lots of players. The problem is our club doesn't have the same mentality to promote the players to the first team, unless some things change.

and thats the most important thing

youth titles arent that important, developing and nuturing talent and bringing them to the first team is what matters.

Eric Dier is gettin better, William has been immense all season, Carlos Mane has been a revelation

next year maybe joao mario, iuri medeiros or others will get a chance.

porto should start doing the same.

That job is giving him brain damage. I wonder if PDC is actually hitting him with a mallet after every disappointing result.

Close call, sure, but hardly an unfair result. The more fair result would have been a Porto victory in both of the games as Frankfurt were dominated.

Still, he's quite clueless and I really hope the name I've heard already lined up as the replacement is true. The concern is paying this manager's coaching staff what they already make/recently made in salaries.
