Israel's Next Friendly: Israel vs. Palestinian Authority????

A soccer match between Israelis and Palestinians could be one way to help end the long-running conflict in the Middle East, a United Nations adviser on sport and peace said Tuesday.

Wilfried Lemke, a German who serves as UN special adviser on sports for development and peace, is optimistic such a proposal could be realized. He said he has supporters ready to provide $1.5 million dollars or more to finance such a game in less than two days, provided politicians would agree to it.

The match could be held in Ramallah, in the Gaza Strip or in Tel Aviv, said Lemke, a former manager for the Werder Bremen football club in Germany for 18 years. The club was one of the best in Europe.

"Right now we are far away from realizing it," Lemke told reporters gathered at the German House in New York City for him to explain the particulars of his job advising UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on matters dealing with sports as a contribution to the advancement of development and peace.

The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has lasted more than six decades.

Lemke said he has talked to Israeli and Palestinian officials, but admitted that the project is a tough one as neither side seems to be able to overcome politics for the sake of sports.

This type of phrase about senior officials whether they are form diplomatic corps or Uefa just proves one thing: they know nothing about the conflict. And just shows how the Goldstone report was a biased one since people don`t know the daily reality and come up with utopian ideas.

How could a 60 year conflict be solved by a football match? How can two peoples be brought together and live in peace just because of 90 minutes?

I could agree if he said it is a symbolic idea that is shows that Jews and Arabs could live together, but beyond this it is too much.

When we still have radicals that only accept one idea from both sides we won´t find any type of solution.

Well, guys this thread will become political so you know what are the procedures and please behave

We don´t want to close this thread do we?

No doubt Israel would beat them strongly.

FIFA wouldn´t allow us to win by that margin, they would say it would be for "security reasons":rollani:

Or they would ask us to lose the game for the sake of the peace process

German-Israeli relations have been in good terms independently from a football match. The last friendly was the last of Richard Moller Nielsen in charge when we were trahsed 7-1.

Iran vs USA played in the WC 98, where you didn´t have a crazy leader in power in Iran and Clinton in his "softpower" style in the US, so there would be a natural approach.

The other games you mentioned i honestly don´t remember taking place, maybe in cricket India played against Pakistan.

We had two Turkey vs Armenia games in these qualifiers and they were peaceful, but obviously this is too little to take the feelings in a short term.

Playing Germany is a very symbolic game because we didnt have any relations with them prior and when we finally did its very symbolic.

I get teary when I saw Chancellor Merkel come to the Knesset, speak in hebrew, respect our sovereignty and wish us a happy 60th
