Croatian cinema?

Ok so we've been hearing about a variety of Croatia's wonderful accomplishments, but I'm curious to know what their best movies are. Someone enlighten me, please.

Slavoljub Tušilović's classics A Fistful of Gold and River of Tears and Modric: A God Among Men are definitely worth watching

Croatian cinema tends toward syrupy sentimentality which at its best is melodramatic and at worst is cringe-worthy. No gold medal for Croatia with respect to film-making.

Serb black comedies are usually more enjoyable, but they often take it too far (personal opinion).

Best Croatian film is Konjanik (The Horseman) from the early 2000s. It's probably the only film I'd recommend to outsiders. Other than that, exactly what Sulla says.

There's a new Croatian movie coming out... "Disaster in Baku: A story of some tears that don't taste quite as delicious as anticipated"

Croatian cinema is mostly state owned and run, or at least funded with stolen property, so it's naturally full of parasitic vermin with political connections and is for the most part sub par just like in the good ole days of socialist misery, nothing much has changed.

I see the busybody thought police has slithered its way back to the Kekistan of XT, the bastion of free speech and free shitposting, the last haven of uncensored thought and unmolested expression - the WWE

Does totalitarian thought control at the behest radical activist types make for a better and livelier forum experience? Stay tuned......

My favorites are works by Damir Cerkovic such as, "Scent of a Gypsy" and the mini-series "Gypsies Next Door (Parts 1-9)". Some say his earliest film "The Gypsy Trader" was his best but I disagree.

I particularly like the follow up to Za Dom, called "Spermi". Classic Pulavić

This one flew under the radar bu I adored Ivan Shepter's 'Be Brave Little Tsiganka', about the 12 year old gypsy girl who travels to Bratislava to face off against the much vaunted Armenians in the annual Math Wars.

This one had quite a controversial ending: she returns triumphantly to Zagreb with a huge gold medal around her neck but it is forcibly confiscated and pooled with the rest of Croatia's gold resources and sold off to the West by the evil Central Bank president. The movie ends with Tsiganka's harrowing scream: No more Gold for Croatia!

This was seen as a daring political critique at the time and the director was exiled to Slovenia.
