Unrealized Potential

Which EE athletes haqd amazing talent but never came close to achieving their ultimate potential?

Off the top I can think of Marat Safin; great athlete who had awesome shot range but had severe anger issues that cost him time and again.

Continuing on the tennis theme, I'd say Cilic. The fact he has a GS and got to the finals two more times is more than I expected from him, just because he's the biggest choker on tour. Amazing talent though. Too bad he couldn't ever find consistency. The guy would make Nadal or Federer look like amateurs in one set and then play like dog shit in the next and lose the match. Unreal.

Some of the EE greats had the benefit of standing out from their peers and compatriots which allowed this aura of high potential and greatness to be constructed around them, but I'm not sure they were clearly better than some good mid-table talents from real European footballing nations that didn't stand out the same way. It's hard to say.

To be fair, that's a lot of players.

The two that pop into my mind instant are Adrians Mutul and Iliev. Both amazingly talented but never took that next step.

Shalimov, Dobrovolski, Korneev and "el principe" Lediakhov.

Kolyvanov i suppose could fit too if you play him as a wide-forward, i was never a big fan of him in a front 2 or lone forward which he had to play as a lot due to the formations in favour at the time. Simutenkov imo was mostly a hypejob.

Arshavin had a ver solid career most footballers would kill for but considering his talent (in EE only matched by Berbatov during that generation) he should have been a worldwide star.

Kolyvanov had insane close control though. Shalimov had that Italian/Argentine classy playmaker style that I love.

Dzeko

He has never played in a CL final (or even EL for that matter) and the only major trophies he has won are 2 EPL titles and a Bundesliga Title.

But he helped Roma knock out Farca in the CL last year.

We Madridistas worldwide thank him.

yeah, he was a very good dribbler and good link-up player, when he played in the front 3 with him and Kiriakov as wide-forwards and drunken Yuran as striker for the 94 qualifiers, or earlier in his career with Dinamo and Foggia as a winger/wide forward he was good. Shite finishing for a lone forward or in front 2 though. He did have a near career ending injury during the 94/95 season which took a lot of his pace away tbf. Also a massive arsehole.
