Backpacking Slovakia

Stedanko asked me for some suggestions for his 2014 trip to Slovakia. I would use this thread to promote Slovakia´s places to see.

some promotional vids for the beginning

Somewhere in Slovakia, Part I (Liptov, Spiš, Šariš)

Somewhere in Slovakia, Part II (Zemplín, Abov, Gemer, Malohont, Novohrad, Podpoľanie)

Vlkolinec village is still well preserved (luckily, no new construction allowed) and shows how our ancestors lived in Liptov area

Brhlovce, cave dwellings, some are still inhabited. We call it "Slovak Cappadocia". Okay, maybe less epic version, but still cool.

Stone cinema in Brhlovce. Now you´ve seen it all.

Slovakia´s Curiosities, Part I:

Medzilaborce
sleepy small town in north-east of Slovakia that is famous for having
A) Orthodox church

B) wooden church in Medzilaborce-Dobroslav

C) Andy Warhol´s Museum of Modern Art

looks like C is correct. It´s not exactly usual occurance that small god-fogotten town on slovak-polish border hosts a world class museum. Trick is that Medzilaborce is close to Miková, ancestral village (pop.158) of noone less than pop-art legend Andy Warhol. Warhol´s museum (opened in 1991 by Andy´s brother John who donated most of Andy´s works) is place of pilgrimage of his fans (myself included) with some two dozens original artworks. In 1992 I´ve stayed over a night in tent at their local football pitch while carefull local kids kept bringing me fresh water, food etc. Had a shower in nearby creek just behind the net and enjoyed fantastic night under the sky with millions stars.

Komárno ethnic hungarian town split by Danube river, hungarian part is named Komárom while slovakian part is known as Komárno. Once one town, now a twin city joined by bridge over the Danube, famous for it´s ship-building industry and biggest fortification system in former Austro-Hungarian empire. Also
Europe place. Built between 1999-2000, each of 40 houses represents different architectonical styles fom all over the Europe.
