Windows 7 is great and will be the XP of it's time, I think all that Windows 8 really brings to the table that is of significance is that metro interface.

So in essence, it's really just the first steps of Microsoft moving towards the tablet market I think.

Is Windows Server 8 the same as Windows 8 but with server capabilities?

No, it's just the next in line for Windows Server after the 2008 version.

This shit better not be aimed at regular stationary desktops and laptops. I'd hate to have to resort to becoming a Linux-nerd.

Obviously it will, jackass.

They'll probably have a classic mode/interface available though, so you won't have to use Metro UI if you don't want to. Not every Windows OS makes the corporate grade (though there were some companies stupid enough to migrate to Vista) but they won't deliberately make an OS that isn't going to be adopted at a corporate level. And an OS that is Metro only won't be very easily accepted just yet.

What I think we will see is a lot more touchscreen enabled systems.

Yesterdays announcement of Suface is supercool. The Idea, that is.
A Tablet which is also a PC.. with a touch keyboard whenever you need, and Win8 inside Sounds Great. Screen 16:9
If it works well (by reviews) its gonna be my next Notebook Upgrade..

so win8 is meant for such devices, it seems

Yeah, a fantastic move by Microsoft on this front.

A cool device indeed which can be use either as a classic tablet or even as a small laptop!

Lenovo as already showed a prototype of a 13 inch-screen laptop (with physical keyboard) that converts into a tablet. I think it will be released in December and will operate Windows 8.

And there was the Asus Transformer tablet which already does it to some degree, with an optional keyboard dock.

I tried the consumer preview and it didn't have it. I also read a few articles about the release preview that came out relatively recently and it was also mentioned that this feature was not present.

I think Windows 8 is going to fail if they make you do this tablet shit on the desktop, laptop (things that don't have touchscreens). Yeah, touchscreens and tablet-like features are nice when they're limited to just those devices. It was so frustrating trying to do anything in Windows 8 tbh. No start button, so something that would normally take 2-3 clicks to access now takes at least 5-6. Even the login screen where you have to drag the background up to somehow "unlock the screen" really ticked me off. I'm on a desktop, not a tablet.

I love how the general public feels that doing things on tablets are so much easier and quicker than on normal computers. Idiots...I'll rue the day when I have to use a tablet instead of a computer. I hope to god this tablet thing is just a fad, leave my desktop OS's alone.

I think there are registry edits you can do to achieve the classic desktop style, so that would indicate that it's still built in to the operating system.

Windows can't go full Metro UI, no way in hell. I've seen first hand the problems moving from XP to 7 at a corporate level, and while 7 to 8 should be easier technically, the user experience would be hell on earth. It would cripple the help desk for a start.

They'll have to have the classic style, at the very least as a feature in the professional edition of the OS.

Ok didn't want to start a new thread but needed some advice.

Basically my works intranet is a bitch. The office applications are in house built and cannot do shit and likewise the email client etc is shite.

So as I do small projects I was wondering what was best as an investment. My laptop is a bitch to keep using and moving about. So I used my I-pad for things like spreadsheets and general document making, which turned out to be a bit of an issue as well. Especially due to the limitations of printing.

So I need either a new mini laptop/ netbook or a Windows Tablet. which would the techies advise.

Bare in mind i have an ipad2 currently.

People have already been used with Android and iOS from their phones. Why would anyone waste money on a Windows tablet when you can get a quad core with Android 4.1 for $200. $200 is what the damn Windows OS would cost.

My quad core Android 4.1 device is sitting in a truck due to delivered to my house today. I might have to leave work early so I can get my hands on my new toy

Arfy - really depends what you want/need. Obviously portability is your main concern, but what sort of work are you doing and what sort of applications do you require?

Windows Tablets are still quite young, and an iPad can probably do most of what you need from it.

You other option is to look into the ultrabook market, which will give you the flexibility (application wise) of a regular laptop but with more portability. I think they're largely redundant now, in the same way tablets have made netbooks almost redundant, but ultrabooks are getting a lot cheaper these days so still an option to consider.

Just need it for basic Office apps. Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Outlook. Portability and ability to print is my main needs. All the sophisticated stuff for work is tied to a big ass MIS.

All me detailed project work can be done on the laptop at home, but thats never really an occurance. Thanks Z, I'll look about. The Mrs is paying for it, so may as well milk her :d. Hmmm that sounds wrong p

Interesting article on Win 8. A good point from the desktop and gaming perspective.
