Virusscanners

Usually use free stuff but since having a free Norton trial version for 2 months, wouldn't mind extending it with either the internet version or version 5,0.

Which one of them would you use? (it's only a tenner difference)

Why not simply MS Security Essentials?

Norton sucks, MSE and Avira are good free alternatives which will do a better job than Nortons.

I wouldn't recommend AVG because it can **** up sometimes (i.e., at work it would turn my Outlook emails to plain text in a shared mailbox, at a stage it used to detect Google Chrome as a virus), and Avast because it can at times be a little more resource heavy than MSE and Avira.

When you consider a huge portion of paid users opt for Norton and McAfee, there really isn't a advantage for paid v.s. free.

BTW, Comodo is supposed to be really good but I've never tried it. And I'm not recommending it because the CEO is Turkish

NOD32 was the benchmark for light but effective virus scanners a few years ago, but it was getting slightly heavier the last time I used it so I don't know how it is these days.

Really, you can't go wrong with either MSE (if you have a licensed copy of Windows) or Avast (Google how to block the daily ads) and a little common sense.

No virus scanner is a blank cheque against a lack of common sense. It's a bit harsh to say that because not everyone knows what's a threat and what isn't, but it's true. People who can't stay more than a month without infecting their computer should really switch to Linux.

There are, but it's a whole lot safer due to the lower number of threats and just the general way Linux works.

Just switched to MSE after having a "reboot pop-up error" with AVG, which was the last straw for me. I simply un-installed AVG 2011, and MSE seems fine.

Do you guys think MSE is the best free option out there? I have a Dell notebook that I use at home to blog, email, watch football and work on, but I really just want basic protection.

I have firewall on, UAC on, and Avira anti-virus installed... but it seems like those annoying fake scanners still manage to slip through every now and then! I was snagging a file on mediafire last night from a friend and I got a fake virus scanner... I know how to remove them and did so with a couple scanners (malwarebytes & superantispyware), but it was incredibly annoying and time consuming. How do you prevent/block those things from ever slipping through?? Is there any way to do so?

IObit Advanced System Care, and Ad-Aware. Both are good at blocking.

I lived in harmony and peace with 250+ viruses for two years. That was before the Internet, though.

Not using anything the past 10 years I've yet to have any problems, unless I've asked for it.

Let me guess Dab, herpes, chlamydiae, aids, Gonorrhea, syphilis? I'm sure they all eliminated each other

At the touch of her lips it grew long and swollen. He gasped as she squeezed and pulled expertly. It was the best balloon giraffe he'd seen.
