Titov or Loskov

These two were the best creative midfielders in the russian league for much of the same time-period.Two classic playmakers with a strong goal threat.

Both also had a similar career arc as club legends that were unable to make a big impact on a dysfunctional national side.Loskov rarely even got to play there, but then again he wasn't a drugs cheat.

In retrospect, who do you consider the greater player of the two?.

Some youtube vids of dubious quality.Mostly just basic goals compilations that don't do either player justice.

For me Loskov, more of a pure play-maker.

Loskov's passing range was insane.

btw if you only watch one bit of those youtube clips, make it the goal against Brondby that starts about 3.15 into the Loskov 2002-2011 part 2 vid.

It really is one of the best goals of the past decade. The way he strikes the volley, keeps it low and guides it into the far corner from such a long ball and at that angle is van basten like.

Loskov was the mentally toughest Russian player I've seen too.

Titov showed a lot of promise but was very fragile in the head.

Russia's midfield in the 90's to early 00's was incredible but could never get it together. Hilarious to see the current midfield crop going to a World Cup.

Definitely a missed opportunity that era was.

They seemed to have hit form in the 2000 qualifiers after the terrible start under Byshovets put them in a win every remaining game situation.Outplayed France away, crushed all the minnows they were supposed to and were handling Ukraine when Filimonov pulled off that disastrous mistake and put them out.

2002 Romantsev had totally lost the plot by then with his awful tactics.Just a complete disaster. The aging defence and lack of a good forward would probably have cost them eventually anyway, but that side had the potential to at least play far better football.

Titov did often seem to struggle at handling the pressure of the national side. He'd turn in a solid distributing peformance where with Spartak in important games he would do that while taking games by the throat, stepping up the workrate and really threatening as an offensive midfielder. He could have gotten away with that if he was Spanish or Italian, but Russia needed the midfielders to be goalscorers as well, considering the lack of quality upfront.
