Dick Advocaat Tribute Thread

any truth in this?

ZENIT, Advocaat could leave at the end of the year

22.08.2008 00.10 by Eddy Akoglu read 987

Latest rumours from Russia are suggesting that Dutch coach Dick Advocaat could leave Zenit St.Petersburg at the end of 2008. Advocaat is apparently sought after by Liverpool and Middlesbrough. Moreover, the harsh St.Petersburg cold weather seems to be too much to bear for Advocaat and his wife. Most importantly, the working relationship between the Dutchman and Zenit has recently worsened due to the fact that no top quality players were signed by the club officials despite Advocaat's request to do so. It really seems that Advocaat (affectionately nicknamed "Little General") will leave Russia soon

Dutch media reporting he wants to leave in November.

Advocaat ready to continue at Zenit

Dick Advocaat has told uefa.com that he has agreed to coach FC Zenit St. Petersburg for the 2009 Russian season.

Yet to sign

Advocaat, whose current deal expires at the end of this year, revealed he had reached an agreement with Zenit president Aleksandr Dyukov in a meeting on Tuesday. "We gave our word to each other," Advocaat said. "But at the same time the contract is not signed yet so either party could change their mind." Dyukov's adviser on transfer matters, Konstantin Sarsaniya, who said the plan was for a one-year deal, added: "I think the contract might be signed next week."

Success
The 61-year-old Dutchman took over at Zenit in 2006 and led them to victory in the 2007 Russian Premier-Liga and the 2008 UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup, all maiden triumphs for the club. Advocaat's side have found things more difficult recently, lying bottom of UEFA Champions League Group H after Tuesday's 1-1 draw with FC BATE Borisov and fifth in Russia with six fixtures left, and he had previously hinted at a desire to return to the Netherlands.

Confident
But he now seems set to stay and Advocaat said: "The most important thing for me is having the confidence that we will be able to fight for trophies next year." He also indicated that confidence would not be affected even if the club's prized playmaker Andrei Arshavn or any other players were to leave. "If it happens we will have money to buy others," stated Advocaat, whose team visit BATE on 5 November.

Well Advocaat will stay one more year......

Very good news for Zenit. I think they will be tough to stop in the RPL next year.

Arshavin might leave but Danny will essentially take his place. At defense, Lombaerts and Puygrenier could form a nice CB duo if they can stay healthy.

We'll see what happens.

I expect Zenit to enter the transfer market, especially if Arshavin leaves.

It is official,Advocaat one more year in Zenit

Advocaat announces Zenit commitment

Dick Advocaat has signed a one-year contract extension to coach UEFA Champions League contenders FC Zenit St. Petersburg until the end of the 2009 Russian season, two weeks after agreeing the deal in principle.

Fourth campaign
The 61-year-old reached a verbal understanding with Zenit president Aleksandr Dyukov two weeks ago, after which he said "we gave our word to each other but at the same time the contract is not signed yet so either party could change their mind". However, Advocaat put pen to paper today on a deal which will take the Dutchman's tenure into a fourth season during which time Zenit will attempt to prise back the Premier-Liga crown won last week by FC Rubin Kazan.

Silverware
Advocaat was appointed in July 2006, guiding the club to a fourth-place finish before they secured the Russian title last year, the 2007/08 UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in August. His charges have found the going tougher in recent months, though, trailing PFC CSKA Moskva – occupants of the final UEFA Champions League qualifying place in Russia's top flight – by seven points with three league games remaining and sitting third in Group H of Europe's premier club competition.

Changes afoot
"We want to refresh the team," said Advocaat. "We were successful with this group of players but now some will leave and some will arrive. I want to reduce the squad from 24 or 25 to 20 next year." Off the pitch, Advocaat is to have a new assistant alongside him on the bench next term to replace Cornelius Pot, who is leaving the club to be closer to his family. "Bert van Lingen will most likely be my new assistant," he added. "He helped me when I coached the Netherlands and at Rangers [FC] as well."

Mutually beneficial
Advocaat also addressed the ongoing issue of Andrei Arshavin's future at Zenit, saying that if the player wants to leave, then both club and individual should come to a compromise. "I think that both sides have to come to an agreement at the end of the season," he said. "Both the club and the player will benefit from his transfer."
