Russia in Olympics 2008,Beijing

Well time to open this thread....less then one month to go.

Can Russia be the number one in Beijing?
In Greece Russia was third in gold medals and second in total medals.

I believe Russia will be the number two in total medals, the question can they win more gold medals then Usa or China.

Well the big problem is the swimming.:rollani:,though russia has bring some female youngsters to shine in the last months hard to predict a gold medal, maybe 2 or 3 bronze.
Usa might get 15 gold's.:rollani:

I start with my prediction in team sports.

Handball
Women,big fav for the gold.
Men,not so strong as in past,a medal will be already very good, likely to be eliminated in the qf though.

Volley
Women:Russia is fav alongside Brazil in my opinion.
Men,Brazil likely will win,Russia will fight for a medal.

Basket
Women:Russia is behind usa and Australia, like in Greece i believe they will win the bronze.
Men,European champions surprising everyone last year,Russia will arrive to the last 8 and then everything can happen.

Water Polo,
Only women, european champions and world league champions,Russia can win at least a medal if not the title.

Overall 6 medals, including two golds is my prediction for team sports.

Ah,looks like Russia have also a good beach volley couple now in male sector, vice world champions or something like that, maybe a medal is possible.

Big,big loss for the basket team,he is a great defender.

Any chance of a medal now Dmitry?

The U.S. will win the gold I assure everyone of that. I was hoping for maybe a bronze for Russia.

If it wasn't for Swimming we'd easily have more medals than the U.S. . Amercia gets over 30 medals in swimming alone, almost 1/3 of their medals are from swimming.

Unfortunately we're no longer a gymnastics power, that used to bring in a lot of medals for us.

Russia got one medal in Greece in swimming,a silver one.

Now things look better,i will say russia can get 10 medals.

Prilukov,Efimova and Zueva the best chances for gold.

Of course you have the open water 10 km....russia is fav in the men and women.

Atthletic needs to bring 10 gold medals,30 medals overall.....maybe too high.

Gymnastic?the men team can win gold this time.

I remember Fetisov or someone predicting that we'd be #1 overall. Most experts are predicting China.

Fetisov should stick to Hockey.

Overall China will be behind Russia but in gold medals is open, maybe usa.

Russia needs to got the maximum golds as possible in shooting, weighlifting, wrestling and boxing.

The problem is the chinese looks damn strong in shooting and in the women wheighlifting.

Usa is a joke, they get 80 per cent of the medals in swimming and athletics.

China will improve in the medal count from 4 years ago for sure. Host countries always do better, and China's youth development is world class. They base their yourt programs off of the USSR's system.

That's the problem with the gold medal count, that a gold in some obscure individual event like, I don't know, underwater reading, counts as much as gold in team sports. Team sport gold should count for as many golds as there are players in the team on the field at one moment. So, basketball gold should be worth 5 golds from individual event, volleyball gold 6, handball 7, football 11, relays should be worth 4, etc.
And rugby 15 (oh wait, that's not olympic sport ). Equestrianism gold should be worth 2, because horses count in as well.

Yeah.

Russian can get around 6 medals in team sports whether it is gold, silver or bronze.

Handball girls should win the gold....so it is 1.5 millions euros,Rus gov might spend around 3 millions euros only in prize money for the team sports.

Quite frankly, I don't care how much medals other ex-Yugo countries win at the Olympics. Regarding Slovenia, I don't think we even have a team at this event, so for us it doesn't matter anyway.

Silnov scales 2.38m world lead in London – IAAF World Athletics Tour

London, UK - Andrey Silnov was hardly the headline grabber in the lead up to the Aviva London Grand Prix - IAAF World Athletics Tour - this week. Yet it was the Russian high jumper who set the standards on a warm, breezy evening at Crystal Palace where Asafa Powell, Yelena Isinbayeva and Phillips Idowu all had comfortable victories, but Allyson Felix and Bernard Lagat suffered unexpected defeats.

With the Olympic Games only two weeks away, Silnov eclipsed the reigning champion Stefan Holm’s recent world leading mark, clearing 2.38m to win the competition by 7cm from Britain’s Germaine Mason.

“My form is coming slightly at the wrong time. I should have jumped like this in the Russian trials,” said Silnov, who finished fourth at his country’s championships with 2.30. “I am very happy to win this event and even happier to get a personal best. [Next will be] the Russian record maybe?”

And he was not chosen for the russian team in Beijing.:dielaugh:
