Russian Medal Winners to get Cash Bonus
"Russia's gold medal winners in Athens could receive the biggest bonuses the country has paid to their Olympic champions. "We haven't come up with the exact sum yet but it should be at least $60,000 and could go as high as $100,000 in addition to what the government had already promised our gold medallists," Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) president Leonid Tyagachyov told Reuters.

The government said they would pay $50,000, $20,000 and $10,000 to gold, silver and bronze medal winners respectively.

"That would make our Olympic champions at least $110,000 richer," Tyagachyov said.

Russia paid a $100,000 bonus to their Olympic champions at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, though winners at Sydney in 2000 and the 2002 Salt Lake City Games received only $50,000." Read more at Russia to fork out bonuses

ya i thought we were one of the top european basketball nations, guess not tho. Sharapova is probably the only Russian player that can go power for power with Serena Williams, Myskina is very good, but Sharapova is our best chance.

Press Conference - Russian Olympic Committee

Russian Olympic Committee press conference with Leonid TYAGACHEV - President of Russian Olympic Committee, Anatoly KOLESOV - Chef de Mission, Mikhail KUSNIROVICH - CEO of Bosco di Ciliegi, Sponsor of the Russian Olympic Team.

Leonid TYAGACHEV - President of Russian Olympic Committee

On the Russian team's first impressions of Athens:

"We're seeing a culmination of all our efforts. The stadia are wonderfully prepared and meet all of the IOC requirements. Our host has done everything to prepare conditions for record breaking."

On preparations:

"We have been preparing intensively. From our performances in various world championships you can see how successful we have been. These are an important indicator entering into the Olympic Games, but only an indicator. We know the quality of the athletes we are up against. We believe we can top the final medal table, since we have a very strong team here. Many of our young athletes will make their names at Athens 2004. A fair-play atmosphere is vital and we have been very strict and severe in punishing anyone who breaks anti-doping rules."

On the financial rewards offered to gold medalists and world record breakers

"All wrestlers and boxers will receive 100,000 USD for winning gold. All other gold medal winners will receive 50,000 USD and an additional 50,000 USD if they break a world record winning the event."

Anatoly KOLESOV - Chef de Mission

On the mood among the team:

"The athletes are in good mood, and are looking forward to representing Russia. Some of our teams have been doing final training in different parts of Greece. The Greek side has been giving them everything to finish their training."

On two athletes not participating in the Olympic team:

"Our Anti-doping committee in Moscow stated that according to the analysis of A sample, two have taken substances. They come from Modern Pentathlon and Athletics. The case is under investigation by WADA. We can reveal the names of the athletes only after the results of the B test. We can confirm that they are not members of the Olympic team."

Mikhail KUSNIROVICH - CEO of Bosco di Ciliegi, Sponsor of the Russian Olympic Team

On the outfits of the Russian team:

"From the smallest gymnast to the largest weightlifter, they all look very smart."

CEO of Bosco di Ciliegi ???? what is it????an italian sponsor?
