Derby County's record signings

Starting from Craig Short in 1992, this is our top 15 transfer fees paid, not all were record signings.

July 2007: Claude Davis (from Sheffield Utd) £3m

Apr 2000: Giorgi Kinkladze (from Ajax) £3m

Dec 1999: Craig Burley (from Celtic) £3m

Dec 1999: Branko Strupar (from KRC Genk) £3m

May 1998: Horacio Carbonari (from Rosario Central) £2.7m

Sept 1992: Craig Short (from Notts County) £2.65m

Aug 2007: Kenny Miller (from Celtic) £2.5m (plus add-ons)

May 1999: Seth Johnson (from Crewe Alexandra) £2.5M

Aug 1999: Esteban Fuertes (from Colon Santa Fe) £2.3m

Nov 2001: Francois Grenet (from Bordeaux) £2.2m

Oct 1999: Lee Morris (from Sheffield Utd) £2m (plus add-ons)

First thing to say is, there are some absolute shockers in that list. At least Earnshaw is no longer our record. From Short for £2.65 in 1992, our record signing went up by less than a million in 23 years, despite all the money that came into the game. No wonder we've done bugger all in years.

Carbonari, Short and maybe Higgingbotham are about the only ones you could call good signings on that list.

Jim Smiths signings from Lee Morris onwards are bordering on criminal negligence. No wonder the club got it such a mess.

I still remember Jim Smith fondly, there was a couple of great years. But after letting so many good players go, the ones he brought in flopped badly. Kinkladze, strupar and burley weren't bad players, but injuries made them flops.

Perhaps as I was quite young at the time, I remember Jim Smith very fondly. As we've not reached the dizzy heights of those 2 or 3 yeRs when his team was it's best since too. But a lot of money was wasted, and when you think of the bargains that were successful, stimac, asanovic, eranio, baiano, wanchope, laursen, Poom etc...should have carried on down the bargains route.

In 1998 the club was in such a good position, to say it went tits up would be an understatement.

Yeah Smiths record in the transfer market is very much unearthing some great bargains, but when he spent money it was a disaster.

Yeah hopes were high back in 98, safe to say Derby fans weren't expecting the next 15 years to be so bleak.

We haven't mentioned your mate Claude yet

Who was the worst signing, Davis or Earnshaw?
