Teams: Derby County, Burton Albion
Rotherham United boss Steve Evans has told the Yorkshire Post he believes Derby County defender Farrend Rawson is Premier League quality.
The former Crawley boss, who once masterminded a famous victory over Derby in the FA Cup with a non-league side, couldn’t hold back his delight after announcing the Rams defender will remain in South Yorkshire until the end of the season.
‘’The young man [Rawson] is going to be in the Premier League,’’ said Evans. ‘’Hopefully he will get there with Derby. He is someone I think that highly of.
‘’It’s a big call to play a young man like that. But I know, having spoke to Macca (Steve McClaren), how highly he thinks of Faz.’’
The 18-year-old has been hugely impressive in his time with the Millers and once again stole the headlines on Monday by helping Evans’ side to a huge 1-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion.
Although not with his parent club, Rawson could give the Rams a boost this weekend by helping Rotherham claim all three points against promotion rivals Middlesbrough.
What next for Farrend Rawson?
Although he is yet to make his senior debut for Derby, the decision by McClaren to allow the youngster to remain at Rotherham could raise a few eyebrows among the fans.
Since making his Football League bow, in which he hugely impressed, the plaudits haven’t stopped for the young defender and now he can claim to be one of the most impressive teenage defenders in the football league.
Derby have been solid at the back for large periods this season, the Rams have been leaking goals recently which haven’t been helped by an unprecedented number of injuries to key men.
The return of Rawson could have been a timely boost for McClaren, especially given his form, but could still be an option for the play-offs if they are to miss out on automatic promotion .
