RAMS COMPLETE DEAL FOR CARROLL
Posted on: Thu 24 Jan 2008

Goalkeeper Roy Carroll is a Derby County player after putting pen to paper on a deal that runs initially until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old is the Rams' seventh January signing and adds further competition for the jersey to Lewis Price and Stephen Bywater.

Carroll has been a target for boss Paul Jewell since the start of the window and has finally moved south from Glasgow Rangers after a drawn-out pursuit.

Jewell said: "I'm delighted we've finally got Roy signed up - it's taken longer than I would have liked but I'm sure he'll be worth waiting for.

"Roy is a terrific keeper - he's played at the very highest level and I've worked with him briefly before, so I know what he's all about.

"The most impressive thing about Roy is the passion and desire he has shown in just wanting to play.

"He's done a lot himself to make his move happen and I think that's commendable.

"We now have some really good competition for the number one goalkeeping slot and that can only be good for all the keepers here."

Carroll's contract at Rangers has been cancelled so there is no fee involved in his move.

He still requires international clearance and this needs to be received by 12noon on Friday to allow him to feature in Saturday's FA Cup fourth round clash with Preston North End.

Carroll began his career at Hull City and soon moved to Wigan Athletic, where he made his name after 170 appearances in four years.

He was snapped up by Premier League champions Manchester United for £2.5m in July 2001 - just six weeks after Jewell took over at the JJB Stadium.

Carroll won the Premier League in 2003 and the FA Cup in 2004 during his time at Old Trafford but was released in 2005.

He joined West Ham United and made 35 appearances over two injury-hit seasons ahead of his release last summer.

Rangers - the club he supports - came calling and he penned a one-year deal with the Ibrox club before making a solitary appearance in the Scottish League Cup.

Carroll also has 19 international caps for Northern Ireland to his name.

A much needed bit of experience between the sticks, Price is a good young keeper but has been thrown in at a horrible time, and has made a couple of mistakes, but has kept going and done fairly well, especially in the shoot out the other night.

Will you say it a third time, when we actually do sign him?

Seems as it now seems we haven't signed him yet I've never known fannying about like it.

Alan Stubbs has also signed on a 18 month contract, got him on a free from Everton, I think its a great addition, we need new defenders and hes good enough to the Premiership!!

Is really hoping one day we will create footballer's who are actually creative rather than have 'great' engines...is that hard to ask

He's not great but he's a massive upgrade on Bywater, and he's championship quality for sure, which is what Derby are building for.

Stubbs is a good signing, but really anybody in defense would be good, even when we conded one goal they still play poorly!

Stubbs will bring leadership and experience

The fact that Carroll was only back-up to McGregor says it all really. McGregor's just an ordinary keeper. Best of luck against Birmingham at the weekend. I actually think you'll do them. They were absolute shit against Sunderland.

It's better to be lucky than good.

Yeah, that's Mills, don't think he completed a single pass in the games he played. Nearly lost the ball a few times though.
