DERBY v Sunderland @ Stadium of Light 01.12.07

THELWELL IN CHARGE FOR SATURDAY
Posted on: Mon 26 Nov 2007

Kevin Thelwell will take charge of the Rams for Saturday's Barclays Premier League clash at Sunderland.

The Rams' Academy boss takes the reigns following the departure of Billy Davies this morning and he will be given help by assistant goalkeeping coach Alan Fettis, and senior players Matt Oakley and Darren Moore.

Chairman Adam Pearson said: "Kevin Thelwell will look after the team this weekend, in conjunction with Alan Fettis, while Darren Moore and Matt Oakley will assist in that process as well.

"The team will be prepared in obviously a different manner but it will be a normal, professional manner.

"We will go up to Sunderland and I have just said to the players that I expect us to be good enough to compete there."

Assistant manager David Kelly, football consultant Craig Brown, first-team coach Julian Darby, assistant first-team coach Colin Miller, goalkeeping coach Pete Williams, reserve-team coach John Davies, sports scientist John Ireland, chief scout Clive Middlemass and head physiotherapist Andy Balderston have also left the club.

Booooooo I wanted Gordan Guthrie in charge. Will be interesting too see what changes are made to personel and system though.

this game is a must win....but now with these events happening I can't see anything positive, and Sunderland are coming off a 7:1 loss so they will be motivated.

Though usually teams play well the first game under a change

So I don't see much change in the team for this game unfortunately.

I don't know, I've never seen our academy line up 4-5-1 so I'm hopeful...

Dunno, Sunderland aren't really good enough to give too much of a backlash, we've held our own against all the over lower half clubs, hopeful we can get something out of this, it's Man Utd away after this, so if we lose we're looking at 6 straight defeats

Hmmm this has the potential in either two ways for me... either Roy Keane has fired a rocket up all their arses, and they just gonna come out and blitz us away, or we are goin to go up their and actually do somethin, becuase in essence it will be like a championship game, because a lot of the their buys have been from championship clubs

Bring it on though... will be a very interesting game

Is really hoping one day we will create footballer's who are actually creative rather than have 'great' engines...is that hard to ask

We have new manager syndrome, so we're supposed to win

MATCH PREVIEW: SUNDERLAND v DERBY
Posted on: Thu 29 Nov 2007

The Paul Jewell era is already underway for Derby County with the first on-field test just around the corner.

A trip to the Stadium of Light is one of the game's most daunting at the best of times.

When the dust is settling after you've just changed your manager, it could be argued that Sunderland are hosting Derby at a good time.

But it could be equally argued that Derby are travelling to Sunderland at a good time too.

Roy Keane's side, after all, were beaten 7-1 by Everton last weekend and are without a win since September 15.

The Black Cats now find themselves 18th in the Premier League, in the relegation zone, with ten points from their 14 games.

There's no suggestion of Keane being under pressure on Wearside but Saturday's encounter is certainly one he dare not lose.

MATCH QUOTE

Roy Keane told www.safc.com on the back of that 7-1 defeat to Everton: "I wish we had a game before Saturday but we just have to wait - hopefully we will take out our frustrations on Derby."

TEAM NEWS

Nyron Nosworthy (hamstring), Kieran Richardson (back) and Russell Anderson (ankle) are all absent for Sunderland this weekend.

Stanislav Varga (knee) is a doubt, while Kenwyne Jones is back in training and will be OK after picking up a knock at Goodison.

No Derby team news is available at the time of writing.

MATCH FACTS

Derby are yet to taste victory at the Stadium of Light - their last win on Wearside was in December 1990, when Dean Saunders and Mick Harford earned a 2-1 success.

Sunderland did the double over the Rams last season with 2-1 triumphs in both encounters.

The last Premier League encounter on Wearside came on the final day of 2001/02 when the already-relegated Rams earned a 1-1 draw through Marvin Robinson's only goal for the club.

You have to go back to February 2 1891 for the first meeting between the two sides, when Derby picked up a 3-1 victory.

A start for Steve Howard will be his 450th in league action during his professional career.

THE REFEREE

Lancashire's Mark Halsey oversees a Derby game for the second time in a month.

Halsey was in charge on November 3 when the Rams went down 2-0 away to Aston Villa on an afternoon where he cautioned Andy Griffin, Darren Moore and Steve Howard.

His 16 games this season have realised 38 yellows and one red, Arsenal's Philippe Senderos.

Interesting that their run without a win is actually 2 days longer than ours

Yet, you don't see the media going on about how rubbish they are, and that there definately going down. Just like Wigan who haven't even got a point since September 15th.

we need to at least score, we can't go two months without a goal!

I actually feel Derby can get a positive result because of the new manager, 2:1 win is my prediction

Makes you sick don't it. They've not got a very good side at all (Leadbitter, Etuhu, Higgingbotham etc..) but the media loves them, and seem to think they can stay up just because of Roy Keane. It's always quite likely 2 promoted clubs will go straight back down, and sadly Brum look the best bet to be the one that doesn't

A big big game today for us... can't under estimate how big it is in terms for our season... I think avoiding defeat must be top of the list for us, because if we do lose today it will be very hard for us to stay up. Let's just hope our performances improve especially for a big game like today

Im gonna predict a 1-1 draw... Miller to grab the goal

Is really hoping one day we will create footballer's who are actually creative rather than have 'great' engines...is that hard to ask

Paul Jewell's first lineup as Derby County face Sunderland

Bywater
Griffin - Davis - Moore - McEveley
Teale - Oakley - Pearson - Barnes
Howard - Miller

SUBS: Price, Leacock, Fagan, Mears, Earnshaw

Earnshaw still on the bench, Feilhaber not even in the squad, but at least we are playing two up front

Well at least we've got 2 up front, thought Teale would play, still some way from the team I'd like to see.

Derby's last away goal in the Premiership, 5 and 1/2 years ago at the Stadium of Light, scored by Marvin Robinson

And we're off....

Been a good start, but we need to get the first goal, if we do, there heads could drop, the fans will get on their back and we can go on and win it. If they get it we will be in trouble.
