Preparing for the Championship already ?

Breaking news: Rams swoop for midfielder

DERBY County have swooped for Leeds United's experienced American international Eddie Lewis.
They have agreed an undisclosed fee for the 33-year-old left-sided midfielder, who is out of contract next summer.

If Lewis signs, he will link up again with Billy Davies, the two having worked together at Preston North End. See later editions of today's Evening Telegraph for the full story

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I dont think he is Premiership class at all in my eyes, definitely a good championship players, but personally I think you could sign better players than him.

He'll have another 1 or 2 years in him possibly, no more than that.

I doubt he'll be no more than a squad player.

If Carlsberg did forum signatures......

Hmmmmmm, interesting one, preparing for the Championship? No, the long term aim is the Premiership, even if that means going back down to come back up.

But Billy does like bringing in players he knows, I guess he's been brought in too add some depth, because we're struggling to get in all the players we want.

Eddie Lewis is decent at Championship level but is woeful at Premiership level. He still has got a good left foot but he lacks the pace he use to have and he won't cut it at Premiership level.

Play Lee Holmes there if needed as at least he will get the experience

You need a big squad at Prem level. Lots of games mean lots of injuries and tired legs.

If you want to stay up (please god, dont make it so) you need all the players you can get and experienced onces can make the difference.

I've got more chance of getting a game than Lee Holmes

He'll be off to Swindon soon.

more of a depth signing, a guy who can play on the left side of the defense or midfield, a position where we need some capable backups

I wouldn't critise players like Lewis to soon, it was only a few months ago people were critising Fulham for signing Healy despite not really cutting it at club level for a few years yet he has 2 in 3 at the top level.

At Reading our squad is mainly made of players who played at lower levels: for example League 1 (Sonko, Hunt), League 2 (Shorey, he was a reserve player at Leyton Orient now a full International) and yet they are playing well at premiership level.

Players have a funny way of rising to the challenge if they have the motivation.

The difference between Shorey or Healy and Lewis is that Lewis is 33 or 34 not 26. His career is coming to the end and there is not enough time to adapt and he did play Premier League level with Fulham I think a few years ago and didn't cut it

I agree that maybe the signing of Eddie Lewis maybe isn't the type of signing that most fans were hoping for, but billy davies obviously due to the low expectation that the media has of the club, rather than waste time going for big players he might as well go for a player who he knows and knows what he's capable off. I seem to remember Lewis whooping our arse in the play off home leg against us a few years back so if he produces something like that every time he plays for us i'll be happy.

Well, my Dad said Lewis played quite well against Brum, got some crosses into the box, no-one there to get on the end of them though except the Oakley goal.
