DERBY V Portsmouth @ PPS 11.08.07

Just over a month to the Portsmouth game, and I'm already thinking about what the starting line up will be

At the moment my guess would be this

Bywater

Mears - Davis - Leacock - McEveley

Fagan - Oakley - Jones - Pearson

Earnshaw - Howard

Possible changes, 2 new wingers, a left sided one more likely and Pearson playing in the centre with Jonesy on the bench. Maybe a new striker as well.

Absolutely no way Fagan can be a starter in the premiership, surely?

we really need help at the back, Derby also need to make some depth signings, unless we have full confidence in the academy players and guys like Malcolm, Teale

Where is Barnes?

That's why I mentioned a new a signing, unless Teale comes back looking more like the player he was in the Wigan promotion team, Fagan at this moment is first choice right winger.

Barnes is not expected to start training again due to his foot injury for at least 2 more weeks, so he will be behind everyone else fitness wise, and I expect him to start on the bench.

Personally think it's a waste of time playing him on the wing, he can't cross the ball, he needs to play through the middle, but I don't see how he fits in the team to be honest. Don't be surprised to see him on the bench quite alot, being used as an impact sub, think Jones will be used the same way. We will look to be more experienced and solid first IMO.

Also on Bob Malcolm, I hope he can be a big player for us next season, he's the sort of player we need, big strong holding midfielder, who can pass the ball. If he can get fully fit he could be a good player, he looked like one before he got injured.

Confirmation in todays local paper that Giles Barnes is very unlikely to be for for the Portsmouth game or even the Man City and Spurs games.

Bad news about Barnes, also I hope to see a few more new faces to be in the starting line up come August.

Me and Jimbo have previously discussed about this threat changing because of the new players that will be possibly coming into the club between and the opening game of the season

I think at the moment, I would like to see at least 3 new players come in to the side, perhaps a speedy winger followed by a defensive minded midfielder followed by another goalscorer.. not too much to ask I know but ooo well.. we have gotta keep the squad building

Personally I'd like to see.

1x Right winger
1x Left winger
1x Defensive mid
1x Attacking mid (kinkladze type player)
1x Striker

Not too much to ask surely

38 quid is the cheapest ticket you can get anywhere in the home end, apart from "silver" matches which range between 29-33 quid, but that'll probably be Wigan and Fulham only

Oh well, my season ticket only cost 180

Well a bit further down the line now, I think Pearson will be in the middle with Oakley. Todd will be a starter either atv the back with Davies, or as a holding midfielder, if we go for a defensive 4-5-1, with probably Earnshaw as the loan striker.

Still hopeful of a new left and right winger, if not, Pearson out on the left with Jones in the middle, and probably would say Teale in on the right.

Definately 2 wingers are needed, as Jimbo is certain Pearson will play in the middle. When Barnes is fit he can do a job there, but at the moment we don't have much, Teale's not done much since he came to us, and Fagan isn't good enough.

Looking at the freindlies, we've played 4-4-2 and 4-5-1, so it's not clear what formation we will be going with, we will surely need 2 quality wingers to come in before going 4-5-1 though. Would be worried we're leaving Earnshaw isolated though.

Knowing Davies, he will probably change it around, you know he likes his "horses for courses"

Might as well re name this as the pompey match thread as well...

Barnes could be out until September

I have the feeling I'm not going to enjoy this season one bit.

Having watched the final freindly yesterday, and assuming there's no more signings before Saturday, and Claude Davis doesn't play due to a hamstring strain, I've settled on this being out starting line up.

Bywater

Mears - Todd - Leacock - McEveley

Teale - Oakley - Jones - Pearson

Howard - Earnshaw

It's a shame really, that arguably our 2 best footballers, Pearson and Jones both play the same position, so we will struggle to accomidate both in the same team, unless we play 5 in midfield, otherwise it's push Pearo out wide, where he can't have as much influence on the game as he can in the middle.

Hmmm that would be pretty much my team as well.. barring no signings obviously

Bywater

Mears - Todd - Leacock - Mcevely

Teale - Oakley - Jones - Pearson

Howard - Earnshaw

After seeing the Espanyyol game I cant help but think though, weather that team can actually make any impact in the league!!!!.. but thats why im hoping the bringing in of new players hasnt stopped.. because we need new players!!!!.. that was evident to see vs Espanyol!!
