Stockport v DERBY (@ Edgeley Park 22.8.06)

The League Cup starts on Saturday and Derby will be without three players, Oakley, Leacock and Jackson will all be out two weeks with injuries and Moore may not play as he had to leave early in the Norwich match.

Derby usually struggle in these early cup games but Stockport are currently fourth from bottom of League Two with only two points

It's that time of the year, for the annual embarassment

We really do, do terribly badly in this, but Stockport are very poor, so we should be beating these comfortably, unleash Luppoli from the start and he'll score

Yes, I wonder if there is any other club who does as badly as we do in the cups, especially this one, every year we say it would be nice to have a good cup run, never seems to happen though.

Boss Billy Davies has his eye on banana skins after a string of Carling Cup catastrophes for the Rams.

He's determined to condemn Derby's dire recent record to the history books at Stockport County's Edgeley Park tomorrow night.

"We are taking this game as seriously as any other," he insists.

"We've been preparing in the same manner as we do league games. We have had Stockport watched, we know what they're about and we've been working hard to ensure our name is in the hat for the second round."

The Rams were dumped out in the first round of the Carling Cup by Grimsby last season, Lincoln City during 2004/05 and Huddersfield Town a year earlier. After a first round win at Mansfield Town in 2002/03, Oldham were the victors in a Pride Park second round tie.

The boss continued: "Cup games are potential banana skins, as this club knows, so we have the right mental attitude - we must be professional and prepared to battle."

Injuries to Darren Moore, Richard Jackson, Matt Oakley and Dean Leacock has limited his options, but Davies will still consider changes for the round one tie against Jim Gannon's side.

"It's important we keep the squad fresh with such an intense run of fixtures," he added.

"But whoever plays should be prepared to represent Derby County in the right way - by putting in a performance that will see us through to the next round.

"We're taking the Carling Cup seriously, as a competition in which want to progress and as a chance to foster a winning mentality.

"Whether it's a league, cup, friendly or training ground match, it's all about winning.

Right then, Moore, Oakley, Leacock and Jackson are all out, and Davies says we will play a strong team, but I'm sure he will want to rest some of the older players (Johnson, Peschi, Edworthy) if he can.

Players I'd like too see given starts are, Lupoli, Ryan Smith and Bolder, I really do think he will want to rest Edworthy for this, but the injuries too Leacock and Jackson have caused a problem there, maybe he will give Meredith, Streete or Addison a game.

I'm not going to make a prediction for this, but it would judt be nice too win one of these games for a change...

Don't think Davies will accept the usual lacklustre shambolic displays, I remember 2 seasons ago we was 1-0 up against Lincoln with 12 minutes to go and in cruise control...we lost 3-1, we went to pieces after conceeding one goal.

Michael Johnson scored not Seth...Seth didn't even play

It's nice too actually anticipate the 2nd round draw for a change

Positives, the defence, another clean sheet, we we're leaking goals badly, and it looks like, we've put a stop to that at the moment.

Ryan Smith, sounded like he had great game, has a great left foot, put in some good crosses, and it was his shot which, after some great skill to find space that found it's way too Johnson to prod into the net.

Morten Bisgaard, sounds to be finding a bit of form again.

Negatives, Howard still hasn't scored, he's playing well but just can't find the net.

Tommy Smith, never had a bad game for Derby, Norwich and this one means 2 in a row now, I hope it's not transfer/contract talks causing the bad performances.

Lupoli had 2 chances, one from a Howard flick on, which he ran onto, turned the defender one way then the other before shooting over...all that turning got himself off balance for the shot...this was the only time a Derby player got beyond the last defender from open play though.

And another one, where Idiakez fired the ball into the box (probably a shot) and he stuck his fott out, got something on it, but it spooned over the bar. He needs a start though, this season we're playing all our good stuff in the 1st half, and then going quiet 2nd half, and that's when Lupoli's coming on.

Yeah 1,100 and something in a 3000 crowd, that's a great following for the Carling Cup, alot of our North Derbyshire and Manchester fans would have been there, not ar for them lot to go.
