1 million - Steve Howard

This deserves a seperate thread, it's a momentous occasion

After my rant in the transfer rumor thread, i put sky sports news on, and it's going across the bottom of the screen, that we've signed Steve Howard from luton for a WHOLE million pounds

ahhhhh how good it is too have some money again.

Good strong centre forward, who scores goals and can hold the ball up, if we can find a good pacey striker too play along side him, we could be in business

Derby County are this morning set to complete the signing of Luton Town striker Steve Howard for a fee of £1m.

Howard, 30, will move to Pride Park on a three-year contract after over five years with the Hatters, during which time he scored more than 100 goals.

The Durham-born front-man is Billy Davies's first signing since taking over as Rams boss in June and he becomes the club's most expensive incoming transfer since the capture of Francois Grenet in November 2001.

Howard, who stands at six feet three inches and weighs over 14 stone, began his career with Northern League side Tow Law Town in 1994 before moving to Hartlepool a year later.

While with Hartlepool he scored 32 goals in 164 league and cup games, and was snapped up by Northampton Town in February 1999 for a fee of £120,000.

He was a popular player with the Cobblers and spent just over two years with them until his move to Luton in March 2001 for £50,000.

Howard has been a firm favourite with the Hatters faithful and has averaged almost a goal every two games in their colours.

He was the leading scorer in each of his full seasons with the club, totalling 103 goals in 228 games.

In 2005/06 he netted 14 times in the Coca-Cola Championship, including the winner against Derby at Kenilworth Road in March, and added one more goal in the FA Cup.

His overall career record stands at 140 league goals in 396 starts, with 47 appearances as a substitute, and a further 13 goals in 44 games in other competitions.

Not worried about the age, I don't think losing any pace will be a problem for him, that's not what he's about, and hopefully we will have pace around him

He's a good player, but not someone that we at Preston would have considered at that price, considering our need to make money back on signings generally.

He should be a good Rasiak replacement though.

I have no sig. If anybody would like to make me one, please inform me

Like I said I'm not bothered that he's 30, he's the type of player, where age won't effect his game a great deal, we can have 3 good seasons out of him. He's a signing for now, not the future, we have Camp, Grant, Nyatanga, Meredith, Addison, Barnes, Holmes, Ashton and Ainsworth all coming through for the future, and to make money off if needs be, we needed somebody for the here and now, and for me Howard is the man.

Van Nistelrooys 30, how many millions are being turned down for him? You don't lose your value at 30 IMO, and Gadsby and co have got the cash to spend, without anything to worry about anyway.

Just giving my reasons, and it's more for certain idiots who I have heard say it's a bad signing just because he's 30, which is ridiculous. But some pratts have to moan about everything, if by some bizarre miracle we signed Cannavarro, it would be a bad signing according to some of the pratts, you come across on another certain message board...

brillant singing for the rams. I knew durkos would object due to Howard's age but like Jimbo said, he's a player for now and if you look at his career as a whole, he is a player who is in his prime right now and is at the peak of his career so 1 million pounds for him is not a bad price. He's proven at this level and is a challange for any defecne.
