EL: Fenerbahçe vs Benfica

Big game ahead for us on the 25th April !

Fener is known for its massive support from the home fans , and seem to be pretty motivated, so it wont be an easy match

to make things tougher we'll be missing Luisăo (injured) , Enzo Perez ( punished) and André Almeida (punished)

regardless, we have to score and build a positive result...

Players called by Jesus:

Goalkeepers: Artur Moraes , Paulo Lopes;

Defenders:Jardel, Maxi Pereira, Garay, Melgarejo, Luisinho , Roderick;

Midfielders: Matic, Salvio, Ola John, Gaitán, Pablo Aimar, Urreta, Carlos Martins , André Gomes;

Forwards:Rodrigo, Lima , Cardozo

Fenerbahce will have potential weaknesses in their left-back Ziegler, who's not that good at defending, Egemen Korkmaz, the other CB besides Yobo is also a very limited defender apart from physical / aerial skills. Not to mention Christian Baroni who is likely to start as a CAM is a slow player that despite being competent doesn't bring much to the table. The rest otherwise functions quite properly or is even stellar at times.

You have to watch out for Moussa Sow who is simply out of this league in terms of skill and the veteran versatile forward Pierre Webo, and of course ever tenacious Dirk Kuyt Meireles works best with Emre Belezoglu but he's cup-tied so he's with Mehmet Topal who's - again - more limited player and that combination doesn't work as well.

ist possible kanarya...i have seen a starting line up like this:

artur

maxi - garay - jardel - melgarejo

matic - andré gomes

salvio - gaitan - ola john

rodrigo

if it is so, i like it...because even though cardozo can be a killer in the hot zone, rodrigo is faster, more mobile and more of a team player

this looks like a very offensive and speedy benfica, and if we do start like that, i think we'll have a strong beginning

hope we win it , of coz

ps. yes Luisăo is quite important, he positions himself very well on the field, and his experience is key , but garay is very strong and so far jardel hasnt let us down when having to sub luisăo ( or garay) in key games

Putting my money on Benfica. Hopefully 3 days in a row :greedy: combining it with Basel not losing

tough game so far, we are clearly missing luisăo ( jardel is having a troubled night), and aimar needs to be replaced with gaitan

as much as i love him, he 's not in shape and not up to the challenge tonight

great game from maxi and specially matic so far

thankfully baroni missed the penalty (good call from the ref....bad decision by ola john who'll be missing the home match)

and we lost...to be fair, Fener was the better team during the entire match, so it was deserved

its a bad result...it means that we have to win by 2-0 or 3-1...which is more than possible if we play up to our level , which we didnt tonight

Benfica was a shadow of itself , we looked lost all game long , unable to put the pressure on the man with the ball and missing the pass like i havent seen in a long time

i've got tickets for the home game and will be rooting for the win , we will make it Benfica

They are fortunate to be down one goal heading back to the Luz. Never really looked like they were ready to take it to Fener. All to play for next Thursday.

They are exactly at the halfway point of their tough 4 match stretch. Winning the derby and losing in Istanbul 1-0 sets them up well heading to Madeira on Monday.

We didn't play as well as we could, no Enzo, Aimar very out of shape and Lima with a lot of minutes. Best we could hope for right now is to be able to put Maritimo away quick so that we can focus on the return game and give them Cardozo and Lima with a healthy Luisao in the back.

Passing was terrible.

Ola John seems really inconsistant.

This wasn't one of our good games, let's hope for a much better one at home.

Will be interesting to see who is selected on Monday. Ola is suspended for the return leg, does that mean JJ gives him minutes in Madeira? Cardozo looked slow, will he sit for Rodrigo and/or Lima? Will Luisao be ready? If not, surely Jardel has to play better. He looked very off in the 1st half.

Melgarejo played poorly & made mistakes that led to the goal. The sloppiest game he's had since the 1st Braga match.

Have to give credit to Fener. They & their crowd were in the game for the full 90. We will need to give them some Inferno Da Luz as a thank you.

Our typical passing game stayed in Portugal. That was truly awful, everyone, even the always reliable Matic were either late, too soft or just plain off target. They did not travel well. Could be fatigue. Could be Aimar (Enzo works 10 times harder). But whatever it is, this is no time to start playing tired.

Although only a bit over 1-hour flight to Madeira, spending a lot of time on airplanes is psychologically wearing. They better man-up.

Aside from Aimar hitting the post, did we have any other shots on goal?
