LS Round 18 Vitoria de Setubal Vs Benfica

The Chupaliga is back for it's 18th round, a win will put some pressure on Braga to keep up since we would be 6 points up with an extra game and they wouldn't want to fall behind. The team is playing solid and we can't expect anything close to teh 8-1 of the first round.

Let's hope for another football show like this team has gotten us used to.

Players called up:

Guarda-redes: Quim e Júlio César

Defesas: Maxi Pereira, Luisão, Miguel Vítor, David Luiz e César Peixoto

Médios: Ramires, Javi Garcia, Carlos Martins, Ruben Amorim, Pablo Aimar, Di María e Fábio Coentrão

Avançados: Saviola, Cardozo, Alan Kardec, Nuno Gomes, Éder Luís e Weldon

The last couple of teams that we've faced all got plenty of "breaks", let's hope for a nice clean game and score at least an extra goal in case there's some bad apito calling like the 3 ghost off sides mid week :smileani:

Tight game so far 1-1 @ 65min

Don't worry.... it only seems kinky the first time.

And we fail to open up a gap, 2 own goals, David Luiz' a real stupid one as he had plenty of time to stop the ball. Cardozo misses a penalty at the first minute of injury time, funny how i told my dad that he was gonna miss

Overall a decent game by Benfica, played mid week and was a bit tired but Setubal was on their knees at the end of the game. It happens, let's wait for our direct opposition to lose points as well.

Cardozo had another stinker. Can't he even practice shooting with his right foot?

I thought Coentrao had an excellent game at LB.

I thought they were terrible for a majority of the game. Prior to the subbing of Martins for Ramires, they only took what Setubal would give them on the offensive end. Not a great deal of decisive passing or movement off the ball. Besides Di Maria, every other Benfica attacker looked flat.

Setubal did a good job of attacking Maxi. I would overall give him a positive game, but he was under duress for portions.

Setubal was given a gift by Luiz, but were robbed of a 2nd goal. Prior to the penalty for Kardec, the ref completely whiffed in not calling a penalty for Di Maria. I don't go out of my way to shit on refs, but he was the worst performer today.

David Luiz's goal was a freak of nature. Outside of that, he and Luisao were very good.

Hate that they have another game on Tuesday. I'm looking for some squad rotation.

I said decent game by Benfica because Setubal didn't just park the bus, they also had an offiside goal that should have stood after looking at the replay. On the other side you had Di Maria who was clearly knocked down in the box which would have given an earlier penalty but who knows if Cardozo could score that , all in all we put more effort and couldnt do much more towards the end as they were hoping to kill any kind of offensive mood in order to get some air, etc. Happens.

Albeit this one was hard luck in fairness. But he's shaky at them anyway. Well, I guess in that respect we were blessed with Simão back in the days.

Seriously. Simao doesn't get enough credit for his ability to take penalties. Anybody can take them, but Simao NEVER misses.

Yeah, Simão and Mendieta! I don't know how they do/did it, but they "just do it", regardless of whether they were a Nike or adidas outfit.

Trivia: Simao never missed a penalty kick in his entire Benfica career.

Not true, this is the second time that i hear this but i'm pretty sure that he missed a penalty before, come to think of it was around 2005 or 2006 and he then scored a goal on a running ball or free kick at the end of the game to win it. I would have to say that it was against Academica, i'll research more when i get some time.

Even so, that guy is one of the best penalty takers in the world.
