LS R11 Sporting 0-0 Benfica

28/11/09 | 21:15 | SportTV1

Very hard to predict a starting 11 for this one with Luisão and Ramires's injuries. The former seems as good as out for this one but the latter still has a chance of recovering in time for saturday. Another question is the left-back spot; will Jesus use Coentrão, David Luiz, César Peixoto or Shaffer?

Predict away and CARREGA BENFICA!

Did I miss something with Ramires? He played in the Guimaraes game.

This game has a little extra juice thanks to Sporting getting the new coach bounce, and SLB's early season performance coming down to Earth some. Rounds out a nice Thanksgiving schedule for those of us in the US.

He returned too quickly after his injury and has been training condicionado since the game with Vitória.

That's always tricky. Fans will sometimes complain: WHY DID HE COME BACK SO FAST!1!1!1!

But these issues are a prime example of managing an athlete is more difficult than looking at a power bar (Like in a video game). I'm sure many of us have picked up knocks/swollen muscles from playing sports, started to feel like our normal selves, and then saw our injury flare up. It can happen more annoyingly the day after- when you body has had time to cool down. I still have to manage a high ankle sprain I picked up 7 years ago (On top of a case of "turf toe" from a game of basketball 15 years ago).

I used to have a REAL issue with Benfica's medical staff (IE the prior discussion about Mantorras in the Guimaraes game thread before it was derailed).

However, they seem to have gotten some things straightened out and are doing a much better job (They've done a good job of keeping Aimar on the field as much as I can reasonably expect).

This is where the doctors and trainers earn their money. They are the under the radar aspect of team building that have a tangible effect on winning games and trophies. Hopefully, he can go- since we lose a great deal without him.

It's a shame that Luisão isn't recovering on time because we could win this game solely on set pieces. With Luisão, Sidnei, Daviz Luiz, Javi Garcia and Cardozo, every foul near the area would make Sporting's midgets pee in their pants.

Sic Notícias jjust confirmed that Ramires is in doubt for the game. In case he doesn't recover, I'd recall Maxi to the right side of the defence and put Rúben Amorim on the right side of the midfield.

You know....Is it me or does anyone get more jacked up when we play Porto than Sporting? Maybe it's becuase I can tolerate Sporting but can not stand the guys up North.

Either way, we're going to miss a couple of key starters so I hope we can withstand and deliver.

Forca SLB just the same!

I think that has to do with the place you live/grew up at. Sportinguistas are scarce in the north and, since they rarely won anything since I've been born, I do find the games against Porto a lot more intense and nerve-racking. A benfiquista from Lisbon would probably tell you otherwise though.

I like the fact that we're playing a same town team but can't really get up to playing the 8th place team in the standings....

For me, it's comparing Celtics vs Knicks and Celtics vs Lakers .

Pedro Proenca arbitra o derby:

I don't get it, why him? He has made the worst calls when we played Sporting and Porto, the worst dive by Silva against Sporting and "touch and fall" by Lisandro last year.
