LS R24 BENFICA vs Académica

Today | 19H00 | RTP1

Players Called up for the match

GKs: Quim and Moreira.

Defenders: Maxi Pereira, David Luiz, Sidnei, Miguel Vítor and Jorge Ribeiro.

Midfielders:
Carlos Martins, Binya, Katsouranis, Rúben Amorim, Balboa, Aimar, Reyes, Urreta and Dí Maria.

Forwards:
Nuno Gomes, Cardozo and Mantorras.

Prediction for the starting 11 (not reliable)

Quim
Maxi - Miguel Vítor - David Luiz - Jorge Ribeiro
Di María - Rúben Amorim - Katsouranis - Reyes
Aimar - Cardozo

Some possible variations include Aimar playing on the left - and Nuno Gomes replacing him upfront - and David Luiz to play as left back with Sidnei replacing him in the middle (highly unlikely)

That midfield is just terrible. Two powder puffs on the wings who spend most of the game on the ground, and then two headless chickens in the middle with no passing ability, mind you both better than Binya and Yebda.

For me, that's the biggest difference between Benfica compared to Porto & Sporting. Porto roll out Lucho-Raul Meireles-Fernando, Sporting roll out Moutinho-Izmailov-Pereirinha and both trios shit on Benfica's midfield.

You guys desperately need some quality in the middle. Tiago would've been well received.

The biggest difference is that Porto's players all play to their maximum ability, whilst at Benfica practically everyone is underperforming. Our problem is far from being the players' quality.

Benfica dominating the game, but Academica get one chance from a corner and score.

1-0 to the students at da Luz.

The score last year at da Luz was 3-0 Academica in the game that Cardozo walked off the field with a couple of minutes left.

1 minute added time

During the first 30 minutes Académica's players rolled and dived and faked and cried for pretty much the whole time, and the ref gives 1 minute of added time!

The rest is Quique.

1-0 Academica FT.

Benfica have a goal called back because the goalie faked being dead, and then a blatant penalty on David Luiz goes uncalled as well.

Robbed of two goals; a great day of football.

Two years in a row now where Academica win and shutout Benfica at da Luz.

Benfica lost but played well, Academica did that they had to do when they went up and worked out for them.

That's why i keep saying that better play bad and win than good and lose.

It's football.

Benfica had a great second period and only failed to win the game because the ref, the posts and lady luck didn't allow. Just on the other side of the segunda circular, Naval was all over Sporting in the second half and didn't score - and even conceded in the last minute. Académica went there once and that was enough.

Quique was not to blame tonight, although the first half was still very poor.

Quique did nothing wrong in this game. The team played well and should have won easily. The ball just wouldn't comply. But that's the problem with falling behind - there no longer any cushion for moral victories.

Overall I think Quique was the least bad of the last 3 coaches. There are glaring weakneses, starting with - and most important in my opinion - Petit's departure. He had a bad (last) season for us and there is no telling if he'd be a shadow of his in-form former self, but not finding a quality replacement for him has been this team's greatest obstacle.

Further, no real winger on the right side, and leo's departure hurt us too. Aimar has had very little influence and has been nothing short of a disappointment. Reyes is an embarrassing diver even by Liedson standards. Quim disappointed us early on with some embarrassment of his own.

Yet, things could have gone a little differently if not for the 3 points stolen from us at the cave. Moments like that can define the season. But alas...

The point here isn't to defend Quique - in the end, there's only a bottom line, not s ummarization of details - but to state that the team is not without glaring weakneses, of which, in my opinion, while coaching is certainly among them, it isn't the most glaring.

My post was made at half-time, after a disastrous first half. The second was much better, I'd even go far as saying we played very well. That night we didn't lose because of Quique, that's for sure.

Even in the first half the play was overwhelmingly in our favor - David Luiz' miss staring the keeper in the face and the shot that clanked off the post.

I think that this was Balboa's best game, that goes to show you how bad these 4 mil were spent.

We just cannot field a starting 11 without a winger on the right side, Katso should be sold since he wants to leave Portugal and Amorim should take his spot while maybe rotating with Yebda.

I agree with Josh, the midfield needs more quality, no quality = more balls through, more work for the defense and no quality balls up front.

With that being said i'd still put Aimar at a true #10 and not as a second forward, Amorim behind him (not knowing if he'd be able to fill that roll fully) and a scrub for the right wing (Quaresma's not doing much, perhaps Inter can include him in the Di Maria deal)

Cardozo is a hell of a forward, serve him balls and he'll score, easy as that.

Cardozo in Porto would have at leas 15 goals with no problems

Anyone agree?
