O Maestro Will Finally Put His Boots Away

Rui Costa to quit at season's end

AFP

December 31, 2007
LISBON (AFP) - Benfica's former Portuguese international Rui Costa revealed Monday that he will retire at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old midfielder said that he always intended to end his career with Benfica, the club where he began his professional career in 1991.

"I would have liked to leave the club proud of what I achieved ... and for what I achieved to be appreciated, and for me to be recognised as a good professional," he told the daily Record.

And he admitted that he would like to continue with the Portuguese giants in a coaching capacity.

"At Benfica I see myself in the job of sporting director. (I) need to continue to smell the odour of the locker rooms.

"But I still have four months left before hanging up my boots."

Rui Costa, who had 96 caps for the national side, retired from international football after Euro 2004, where hosts Portugal lost in the final to Greece.

After Benfica (1991-94) he played in Italy with Fiorentina (1994-2001), then AC Milan until 2006.

He returned to Benfica last year but was sidelined for long periods injured. The club are currently second in the league seven-points behind FC Porto.
We will never forget you Rui

he's class act

deserved more recognition than he got (outside Italy and Portugal I mean)

Big games are easy than the other games, unfortunately. Every times we have the control the games, under the control the games, during the games we had the some possibilities, some big chances, some big okazyons, something like that but what can I do, sometimes? And….it’s the football, that’s the football, something happened. Everything is something happened. - Fatih Terim

Completely agree. I'll be happy to see Benfica without him but very sad to see our league and our football losing such a class player.

An artist. That's what he was and will be.

I love him, I don't think I'll ever see anything like what he and Batistuta did at Fiorentina. The futebol they played was more entertaining than anything I've ever seen and in a sense I hope I don't see futebol like that again, because then Rui Costa I will always remember.

A maestro in the truest sense of the word. Rui has been so entertaining that at times one felt that none should tackle him & let him play on. Never seen anyone with such beautiful through passes & was a brilliant shooter too.

Respect.

Thank you Rui for everything you have given to the game of football and good luck in your upcoming efforts off the pitch.

Emotional scene yesterday when he was subbed for the last time. The respect that came with the quiet, calm applause of the standing ovation was goose-bump city. Only Eusebio's topped the hight of emotions mixed with pride and sadness of a Benfica legend saying goodbye to his footballing career.

Thanks, and good luck.
