SLB Manager: Santos Sacked, Camacho Chamado

According to this article, Fernando Santos is no longer the coach of SL Benfica, and it seems Jose Ántonio Camacho is replacing him.

In my eyes, that is really bad timing from Benfica, just before the important CL-game.

Yup, looks like he's gone, also looks like Jose Antonio Camacho's coming back.
Wish him luck...

As a Real Madrid fan I certainly have a different opinion on Camacho than the rest of you, but I acknowledge he's been great for Benfica and is miles ahead of Fernando Santos.

This is a positive move for the club, but also something that should've been done months ago. Now the players have to yet again get accustomed to a new coach, new system, new squad selection, etc.

I'm wondering if Benfica will be too far in the hole to dig themselves out by the time things are straightened out.

Camacho's a good motivator, always giving instructions to the guys on the pitch, etc, maybe that's what Benfica needs right about now. We also have some change to buy another good player or two so keep that in mind as he might demand someone.

I'm not sure the link but somebody on a Porto forum posted this:

Camacho deverá ser apresentado amanhã em conferência de imprensa e já deu o aval à novas contratações pretendidas pelo Benfica. Para a defesa, Zé Castro é pretendido por empréstimo, ainda na sequência do negócio da venda de Simão Sabrosa, para o meio campo o Benfica está próximo de fechar a contratação de Fábio Rochemback, enquanto para a linha avançada o experiente Pauleta é a primeira prioridade.

I will ask for a link to the article or try to find a source.

Forca Camacho!

FS should never have been hired in the first place. That was a huge blunder, of which cost us the championship. There's no way we would have lost the championship last year with a quasi, half-professional at the helm. FS was a from Porto.

Next on the agenda - getting rid of Luizinho and voting in Joe at the next election.

Actually, it’s just the opposite. The team was ready to give up completely on Santos and I would have had zero confidence in their ability to draw or win in Denmark next week with him in charge. He would have trounced out a stupid defensive lineup, driven Rui Costa into the ground for 90 minutes after making him play 90 this weekend vs. Guimaraes, made horrible substitutions, had no clue how to respond once Copenhagen went up 1-0 in the first half and then blamed the players after the loss.

Now – the players will respond in a positive manner under a new coach, one that the veterans (Nuno Gomes, Petit) know and respect and one who won’t play for the draw or make stupid tactical decisions that will lose them the game before it even begins.

Benfica’s winning at home against Guimaraes and advancing to the Group Stage.

Forca Benfica!

Camacho to coach Benfica again - Report

LISBON, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Jose Antonio Camacho has been reappointed coach of Benfica, according to a source at the former European champions.

The appointment of the Spaniard is likely to be made official on Tuesday, said the source who declined to be identified.

Earlier on Monday, the Portuguese club sacked coach Fernando Santos after Benfica were held to a 1-1 draw at promoted Leixoes on Saturday, their opening match of the Premier League season.

"Benfica have reached agreement with Fernando Santos to end his (two-year) contract," the club said in a statement.

The 52-year-old Santos, who took over after Dutchman Ronald Koeman quit at the end of the 2005-06 season, was the first coaching casualty of the Portuguese campaign.

Camacho helped the team finish second in the league in 2004 during a previous stint in charge.

Benfica won the European Cup in 1961 and 1962.

SLB Manager: Santos Sacked, Camacho Appointed

Our calls have finally been answered! It's nearly as if someone was mysteriously looking at our forum for the past few months

Benfica have come to terms with Santos and the parties have agreed to go seperate ways. One can only say that Santos stay was nothing short but failure marked with frustration and agony.

His successor? Well none other than Jose Antonio Camacho, the man who managed us a few seasons back and is highly regarded despite only finishing second to Porto (UCL Champions).
