UEFA Cup 06/07 - 1/16 draw - SL Benfica vs Dinamo Bucareste

Luck has said that we will play Dinamo Bucareste in the UEFA Cup. First leg on the 14th or 15th of February at home. Second leg a week later, on the 22nd in Bucharest.
Could be worst, I guess, but they're definitely tricky.

If we make it through, we'll face the winner of the AEK - PSG round (on the 8th and 15th of March).

Some info on Dinamo and our performances against romanian teams:

- they lead their league by a wide margin.
- we have faced them only once, in 1999. We lost at home 1-0 but beat them away 0-2 and went through.
- that was the only defeat against a romanian team. We have played 8 games against them. 3 wins and 4 draws.
- the other games were against Steaua in 1987/88, European Champions Cup semi-finals, with a 0-0 in Bucarest and 2-0 at home. Lost that final on penaltys, against PSV.
- again, against Steaua in the Champions League group stage of 94/95, a win 2-1 at home and a draw 1-1 away.
- finally, Universidade Craiova, UEFA Cup semi-finals, 0-0 at home and 1-1 away. We lost that final too, against Anderlech.

here's something interesting about your future opponents...

Rednic on a Dinamo bender
by Paul Saffer

in uefa.com

Many of you, valued Off the Ball readers all, will no doubt be about to receive Christmas bonuses (we don't, as we prefer to pass the savings on to you). FC Dinamo 1948 Bucharest coach Mircea Rednic is one man with an extra bulge in his pay packet having been handed a reward for winning the Romanian championship, despite the fact that 15 games still remain this season and the title is far from officially clinched.

Money changes everything
Dinamo have certainly been in fine form this term, and with 17 wins, one draw and one defeat are 13 points ahead of FC Steaua Bucuresti. They have also reached the UEFA Cup Round of 32, and Dinamo directors have decided to stump up. "My day started happily after the Dinamo board decided to give me half of the $100,000 [€75,000] promised bonus for winning the title," Rednic told Reuters on Wednesday. He is taking no chances, though. Should the unthinkable happen, his bosses cannot expect a refund. "I've told the major shareholders that I'm investing it all as soon as I can - it won't be possible to return it," added Rednic, smoking a big cigar on his way to catch a plane to Tahiti.

"The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

We can't complain about the draw, i respect Dinamo since they are a good side but we are clearly in a different level.

I remember the last time we faced them and the atmosphere will be electric in Romania. If we are playing our football by then we should try to solve the thing in Lisbon because at home they are dangerous.

Anyone knows when this match will take place? Hopefully Rui Costa is playing by then...

Dinamo managed to progress to the latter stages of the UEFA Cup last season (quarter finals i think) so it certainly won't be a walkover. You'd expect Benfica to have enough class to get through over the two legs though.

All the best.

No, because Dinamo are certainly the best team in Romania currently. But they have to learn to compete at this level.

Very tricky... It's either going to be an overwelming victory for us or for them.

Apologies, i wasn't meaning to sound dismissive of Dinamo or anything. I've seen that happen with Celtic on plenty of occasions on forums and know how annoying it can be when people act so ignorantly.

Having played Benfica i know how good they are, especially at their own ground, but as the Romanian clubs have shown in European football over the past couple of years no team from there can be taken lightly at all.

When you say that they have to learn to compete at this level are you saying they're the least experienced side of the Bucharest clubs?

They are the least experienced..and their defence is very young. Their best central defender is 20...the other one is 21..the left wingback is 22.

Wow, very young team. However, they sound very dangerous; hopefully they make it into the CL next season.
