CL 3rd Round Qualifying: Austria Vienna v SL Benfica

Off we go, season will start tomorrow

i dunno about u guys, but personally....to me, it doesnt feel real lol its really really early...i sure hope the players are ready.

austria vienna isnt a "big" team, but there are no easy opponents anymore, and i expect us to encounter a physically well prepared team, tactically disciplined and with the ambition to knock us out of the competition....so we have to take the lead and show whos the boss

Santos has called the following players:

goalkeeper: Moreira ,Quim

defense: Nélson, Luisão, Ricardo Rocha , Anderson

midfield: Petit, Beto, Diego, Katsouranis, Karagounis, Nuno Assis, Rui Costa , Paulo Jorge, Marco Ferreira, Manu

attack: Nuno Gomes, Fonseca, Mantorras, Marcel

some key players are out injured, such as miccoli and leo, alcides and joao coimbra werent called either due to injury as well..according to "Record" katsouranis got injured today during training and his recovery in time for the game is being questioned...

im very happy to see that moretto is not travelling to austria

we are lacking defenders as 2 are out injured, but i think the ones available can and will do a good job...got plenty of midfielders outhere to control the midfield....enough strikers to score and...yes we seem to be lacking someone on the wings...with simao on his more than likely way out, with leo injured, and with manduca loaned.....but still, nelson can move up ( with rocha staying more on the back) and manu can do the job as well...paulo jorge i havent seen enough of to pass judgement on but...i trust this team will be up to the challenge and win the game

my starting line-up (still very experimental though, as i dont know how fit some of these players are by now....)

Code:

                 Quim

nelson luisão anderson rocha

        petit katsouranis

              rui costa

manu nuno gomes fonseca

Katsouranis could also play as a CB and do a good job at it.

CB as well? is there any position that guy hasnt done yet?

well....given we got 4 defenders available, and all starters (except if leo was available, it would be between anderson and rocha to see who would start) katsouranis doesnt need to fill in a CB spot, but its good to know he can do it, in case one of the 3 CB's we have available has to be replaced

Thanks for that.
We need a portuguese Tridente on Europe's highest stage for the first time in history, we've never been so near.

Even with the absence of some important players i think Benfica might even pull the away win today. The players are looking forward to an official game to show what they can really do and i'm predicting a good night for Benfica.

My 11:

---------------- Quim --------------
Nélson -- Luisão -- Anderson -- R Rocha
--------- Petit --- Katsouranis ----
Manú ---- ----- -------- Paulo Jorge
------- ----- Rui Costa -----
------- Nuno Gomes -------

Wake-up call for Austria
Tuesday, 8 August 2006
by Lukas Wachten
in uefa.com

FK Austria Wien know they will have to raise their game if they are to get an early foothold in their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie against SL Benfica tonight.

Austrian duo
One of two Austrian sides battling for a place in the group stage along with big-spending FC Salzburg, Frenk Schinkels' team kick off against the Lisbon giants as underdogs - not least because they have made a less than impressive start in the Austrian Bundesliga. The 2005/06 double winners have yet to win in four league games this season, drawing three and losing one. More disturbingly for Schinkels, they have scored just twice and last week lost their most dangerous striker, Filip Šebo, to Rangers FC.

Customary optimism
Such bad news has not dented Schinkels' customary optimism. "I can't go around saying Benfica are bad and we are great since we haven't won a match so far," he said. "It will be very hard but if every one of my players plays at his best we have a chance even against a top side like Benfica." Austria are still to shine, but will take comfort from the fact Benfica are hardly battle-hardened themselves. "The Portuguese have not played an official match this season so have not been able to find their system," said Schinkels, who will be mindful that Benfica have defenders missing including full-backs Léo and Alcides. "However, they are a class above us."

Wimmer fit
For Austria, regulars Markus Kiesenebner (viral infection) and Christian Schragner (knee) are ruled out, although Schinkels can call on veteran midfielder Gerd Wimmer. "He is fresh, fast and experienced enough to give a top performance in such a tough game, even though he has recently returned from injury," said Schinkels. The last time the sides met, in the first round of the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1961/62, Benfica won 5-2 on aggregate and went on to beat Real Madrid CF 5-3 in the final.

Serious rivals
Their coach Fernando Santos is glad to have the chance of a rematch. "I had a feeling we were going to get Maccabi Tel-Aviv [FC] in the draw, but it's always good to avoid big trips at this time of the season. However, we have to take Austria Wien seriously as they are Austrian title-holders." Schinkels, meanwhile, expects a 25,000 crowd at the Ernst Happel Stadion to wake his team from their slumbering form. "We want to seize our opportunity in the Champions League and play against Europe's best," he said. "Playing Benfica is a real treat for us - one we will relish. We can't be sure of a win, but we can be sure we will give everything to win."

1-1 at HT

we scored 1st, with a delicious goal from nuno gomes

great pass from katsouranis, great assist from paulo jorge and classy classy goal from nuno...it was a goal "a la madger"

the game has been a bit slow, as expected, but we been controlling it fairly well, need to play a bit faster i think...manu is missing a lot of passes, paulo jorge is playing better than him

the austrians ended up scoring from a long shot after a confusing situation in our area, and a lot of distraction from our defense

nelson missed the net by inches very close to the break....it would have been one mouthwatering goal, great shot!

ps:no....manuel fernandes wasnt even called for this game....

ok thanx, typical Sky Sports talking bollocks

seemed a bit weird seeing as he was at the same sports clinic as Sol Campbell yesterday. if he gets the all clear next week you'll have a nice £8m to play around with

that would be true if Benfica would have the whole pass of the player but as they only have 50% of it, what could be £8 is only £4
