Manuel Fernandes to Portsmouth?!

Several portuguese news sources are reporting it, almost as a done deal, namely Bola Branca, one of the most reliable sources on sports.

They say the deal can happen at any time, and the values on the table are around 15-18M€.

I really hope this doesn't go through, but for some reason, I can see it happen. Remember that we only have 50% of Manel...

Wow, we shouldn't reject so much money to be the utmost honest, though it would hurt to see Manelele leave. It's very early in the season, we can still seek for appropriate replacement.
Chainho for example

With Simão leaving, do we really need to close the deal now? The kid is 21 years old.

True, but soon or later he will leave anyway and try the spanish or english league and as long as he's still so young we get the best money for him. On nowadays football-market youth ranks even above quality (and Manelele has both of em, which explains the high price)

------------------------------------------------------------------

If he ends up going, I actually think it will be a good move. The English game is very aggressive and perfect for developing a DM and he's already shown he's an aggressive player. Hopefully the EPL can develop his game in others areas, such as vision and stamina. The only problem is that I don't want him turning into another Viana although they play different positions.

On a side note, I know this is the Benfica forum, but speaking of Viana, it's kinda sad how I just related to him. I really was behind him coming into the WC and he disappointed me to the point I'm starting to believe he is the second coming of Hugo Leal. Hopefully, he can still turn it around as Valencia still believe in him.

i agree OG...viana and leal seem to be the same kind disapointment, talent wise but of coz leal left benfica in a much diffrent way from how viana left sporting....

like u said...if manuel does leave for the EPL, lets hope he has a better destiny...tbh, i dont think the EPL is a good place for him to develop what he needs to develop the most, his passing skills....specially as he is a small player, i reckon he may have some trouble imposing himself in a league where size is rated so highly, specially for a DM position (even if manuel can play a sort of a transition role )

Portsmouth have been close to signing numerous top players this summer and thus far have only pulled off Glen Johnson on loan from Chelsea.

So I wouldn't worry about it until he's presented as a Pompey player.

Viana just went to the wrong club, btw. Newcastle is like the Inter of England for a lot of players.

The front cover of that paper just says "Good bye Manel" and adds that he is leaving the club after the pre-season training in Switzerland and that Benfica is only getting half of the money from that transfer.

Sorry for the knife twisting but this is great news for us. Benfica loses one of its best players and you even miss the chance of making good money out of it.

It will take a very very generous offer from Portsmouth to take Manuel Fernandes, as Benfica only possesses 50% of the "passe" and thus will make it very difficult for them.
