Manchester United set to come in for Fernandes

Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for Benfica midfielder Manuel Fernandes according to the Portugese media. The midfielder has been in fantastic form this season and has also caught the attentions of Barcelona.

Only just turned 20, Manuel Fernandes is a product of Benfica's youth system who made his first-team debut during the 2003/04 season, under then coach Jose Antonio Camacho. A defensive midfielder, he made an immediate impression on both Camacho and the Benfica supporters, scoring in only his second game for the Eagles.

The following season, under the guidance of legendary Italian manager Giovanni Trapattoni, Manuel Fernandes established himself as a first-team regular in the centre of midfield alongside Petit. As the Lisbon club won their first Portuguese title in 11 years, he was an ever-present, playing an active role in all but five league games.

He would be a good pick up for you Man Utd seeing as Man Utd need that defensive presence back in the midfield since Keane left. He can also push forward and has a knack for a goal or two.

manuel is a formidable player, and i know we wont be able to keep him for much longer, sadly

but i hope we can hold him for one other season at least

still, when he does leave, i would rather see him play in a club like MU, rather than barça, coz MU fans and structure are much more supportive of new players brought in

I haven't seen it in any, to be honest, but I only read the online editions. I've seen it in the past, but not is the last days.

What is the purpose of a rumours thread when threads like this exist? I think you should merge this with that thread.

most young players that move to Barça fail miserably mostly because they aren' given enough chances and the supporters demand too much immediately

Great examples are Simao and Quaresma.

You wouldn't see a Darren Fletcher play more than a handful of games for Barcelona.

exactly what virgo said

another example would be maxi lopez, and overall barça fans ( and board) show little patience and expect any player to have an immediate impact..in england in general, and in MU in particular, both fans and board seem more patient and supportive

It's great that you immediately mention the two real reasons why both you and inacio claim that about Barca as you saved me the work.

Both Simão and Quaresma were way too young to be playing in a club like Barca. They still haven't developed enough as footballers and mainly as men when they were sold by cash strained Sporting and Barcelona is not a kindergarten but a very demanding football club, exactly as Man Utd is.

Are you not forgetting what happened with Figo when he moved there?
From a clearly above the average and very talented player but a bit too levezinho and whinning they made of him at a certain point the best footballer in the world.

Well then again, there were also other things that effected their career with Barcelona. When Simao was playing for Barcelona, they were heading towards a down fall created by mismanagement of the club at various aspects. They had no clue what they were doing at that time. Quaresma suffered different problems. One was definitely him believing he was God's gift to football and that he should start regardless of any reason. This ofcourse created a conflict between him and Rijkaard, which was a huge mistake on his part. Then he suffered a broken leg, which made matters worse because there was no way he could practice and possibly patch up his relationship with Rijkaard.

Age in football, as many times in life, has very little to do with what stands in your ID.

Although Cristiano Ronaldo sometimes still behaves like the kid he is, in many other occasions is he surprisingly mature, what has obviously helped to make of him a regular on Man U's first XI.

Simão and Quaresma were just too imature when they moved to Barca.
