CL Quarterfinals 1st Leg: SL Benfica - FC Barcelona

The first leg will be played tonight at 19.45 local time in Estadio Da Luz and I can't wait for it. It will be the third official meeting of both sides in the Eurocup. First time they met in the greatest european final ever (in my subjective view ) 1961 in Berna, Wankdorfstadion when Benfica beat Barcelone 3:2 with Coluna scoring a magnificent match-winner and won their first Eurocup.

The second time both sides met was when Barcelona won the Cup (note: whenever those sides meet one of them wins the trophy ) in 1991/92 Cruyff's Dream Team didn't manage to win in the old Da Luz from where they went home with a 0:0 draw. They however made the historical scoreline between those two magnificent clubs 4:4 by winning at home that season 2:1 (goals scored by Stoichkov and Bakero, Cesar Brito was Benfica's name on the scoresheet).

I personally am looking forward to my both favourite sides taking on each other and my decision whom to cheer for is a difficult one but set yet. I'm a Benfiquista sobretudo and so will cheer for Benfica obviously. If it was not for our Glorioso to make it through I will rest relaxed and in joyfull happyness when Barça gain the trophy at the end of the season.

Here's how I would line the team up:

Quim - Nelson, Luisão, Anderson, Léo - Petit - Simão, Karagounis, Robert - Miccoli - Mantorras

Agora não, que joga o Benfica! (Deolinda)

Camacho talks about the atmosphere at Estádio da Luz

Thanks, mate

Yap, very true, Puyol, Marquez and Edmilson being out of the match could give Benfica a certain boost. Yet still Barça have their excellent offensive qualities. Will be a tough challenge for our defence-line.
However, may it be a great match and as you said already, may the best side win!

Really I rather have Miccoli or Mantorras as a lone striker. Koeman better not put Rocha in at RB because Ronaldinho will have a field day. Our best option at that position is Nelson, he matches up much better to Ronaldinho than Rocha. If Rocha starts, I could possibly see him being red carded in this match. I like the three man defensive front, but I rather attack with Simao and Geovanni (rather than Robert) on the flanks.

I am suprised not to see Miccoli in your line-ups. Good luck regardless and hopefully we will meet in the semis

Maybe it's interesting for you to read what the Catalan newspaper "Mundo Deportivo", which is for Barca what "A Bola" is for Benfica, have to say about the duels of tonight...

Duelos de altos vuelos
Oriol Domènech, 28/03/06 in Mundo Deportivo

MANUEL FERNANDES/VAN BOMMEL

We played much better in the second half. Our counter attack was more effective and we were denied a penalty off of a hand ball. Barcelona clearly could have been up a couple of goals if it wasn't for Morreto. It's going to be an interesting second leg and hopefully Koeman utilizes Nelson. Forca Benfica

been away from the pc and watched the game at a friends place BUT i would like to thank bier for an excelent introduction

what can i say?

great football game, very exciting, many chances from side to side, barcelona with the edge in the 1st half, benfica with the edge in the 2nd half

im bursting with pride of our team, no words to thank them for their effort tonight

robert was pathetic and i hope he doesnt start any game so soon. ricardo was all alone covering the flank during the 1st half, and that asshole didnt provide any help, nor made any attacking efforts.
Also i didnt change my mind one bit about moretto, who made unbeleivable blunders again, but he also had a couple terrific defenses...stilll, my opinion doesnt change , hes crap and has some luck at times

now the rest.....ricardo was a giant, leo, anderson, manuel, miccoli., etc..all, all of them...and one word for a player that everyone knows i dislike and cant stand...beto...he was great tonight and put deco in his pocket:thmbup:

what can i say? the vast majority of barça fans in XT said barça would walk all over us in both games...well it didnt happen, and the only reason we didnt win 2-0 tonight, was becoz the ref helped barça by not calling two clear penalties

0-0....bit frustrating result after what happend, specially in the 2nd half, although we did have some luck in the 1st half ...however our 2nd half was much better ( same as in the anfield game)

now for the 2nd leg anything can happen...benfica just has to play like today, except that robert cant start ( plez put nelson in his place!) .

we got to keep humble, and we deserve respect , becoz we been showing we may be poor, but we are still benfica

benfica

Well,i am proud of my team and also for the first time with Koeman...of course apart from Moretto.....

That Barça team is damn good, the best in europe right now....especialy in attack...so we play as we should play,of course we made some defensive errors but you should give credit also to Barça team.

Ricardo Rocha....

So we are now with 30% per cent of chances to pass tp the semi finals.....

Of course it could be higher if it was not a dumb english ref....

Probs to Barça, thrilling display of football-skills however some of our players managed to get recognised as well. I'm talking of Simão, an incredible Ricardo Rocha, Miccoli and yes I admit it Moretto (regardless of his two mistakes which gave Barcelona two good opportunities given he could parry them in style). I'm proud of that team tonight, they obviously didn't have it to mess with the talents of Barça on their level of skills yet however managed to hold them to a draw which could become vital if Simão was to show us something outstanding again in Camp Nou or Luisão might boost another header past Victor Valdez. But one thing is for sure and evenmore obvious after todays match, Barcelona will be the longest 90 minutes of Benfica's season

Agora não, que joga o Benfica! (Deolinda)

Benfica, though it felt strange for the first time of my life watching a Barça-game without cheering for them, but I'm a Benfiquista above everything else.

Disappointing game from the team, we could have lost this game by 2 or 3. Yes, the game changed a bit in the second half but we were still harmless. We are much better than this Benfica side who played against Barcelona.
