CL round 2 leg 1: Benfica - Liverpool

Tomorrow at 19.45 local time in Estadio Da Luz. Benfica is not in their very best shape, but that was a situation in which our team already brought up a miracle-alike victory this season against an English club. Yet I'm confident they can win this one but it might not be sufficiently high to survive at Anfield. Let's see what the day brings. Here's my line-up:

Quim - Nelson, Luisão, Ricardo Rocha, Leo - Petit - Simão, Manu Fernandes, Robert - Mantorras, Nuno Gomes

Força Benfica!

Agora não, que joga o Benfica! (Deolinda)

don't let the Koe-man read this one or else he is really going to call her for the first XI together with her two siblings to strengthen your midfield!

...hmmm, actually I don't think there is that risk because in spite of his constant changes he never plays with three midfielders.

Sister Lucia can't help, Benfica needs to roll in there and play with a sense or urgency as it they has lost the last 3 games....

As Koeman said, against Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal weren't able to create clear chances to score and that tells a lot about their defense. Nevertheless we're playing at home and the players will be once again motivated to give the fans a big win. Whether the motivation will be enough we'll see, but history shows that in europe, we don't play around.

Geovani will be missed too, he's a big game player and you never know what you'll get outta him.

Looks like Koeman is going back with Alcides on the right, i'd go with the Nelson/Leo lines on the sides and put pressure up the wings.

We'll see

Well this is the match that could possibly dictate our form in the next couple of weeks. I'd have to say it will also have a role in Koeman's reign.

I think Alcides would be a good option for the second leg since he would make it very difficult to attacks from the left to work and would give his extra cms for the corners. Nélson for the home game would be the ideal since we will need to dictate the pace of the game and keep them away from our goal.

I rate Gerrard and Luis Garcia highly. I not quite fond of Alonso though.

How can you even say that. Garcia is an OK utility player, nothing more, OK skills but very inconsistent. Alonso is one of the best passers in the game today.

Good luck for the game guys, I have nothing but tremendous respect for your club's history and of course present (well done on eliminating the prawn sandwich eaters ). One of our advantages is that we underestimate noone, being underdog CL winners we know what it's like against all odds, plus you already put ManUre out and you can definitely beat us on a good day, it's 11 humans against 11 humans out there.

It's understandable because the portugese football emphasize on attack and Alonso is not that type. Look at full back & you might see that they're always overlap & attacking.

I seconded that... we won't have that arrogant attitude like those Mancs. And we always play a lot better in European game. So hope for a good game and great atmosphere.

sadly :irritate:

great sportsmanship from the liverpool fans

i hope we all get to see a good high quality game, and well, we cant all be happy about the resullt innit so i hope its us

i think that in spite of the crap we been up to for the past couple weeks, tomorrow we will play better, and i do trust we will be able to win....thing is, with koeman u can never tell which players he will decide to start...and since he changes 6 players every game...it doesnt help build a consistent team

i hope he plays leo on the left ( no rocha), anderson and luisao in the mid, nelson on the right.
simao and robert on the wings, petit and manuel in the mid...and karagounis behind nuno gomes...that would be my starting line-up specially if geovanni is out.
as for the goalie, i reckon it will be moretto of coz

something tells me though, that we will see some of keomans "inventions"

You can't find it cause it hasn't been revealed yet, and trust me, with Koeman don't bother guessing. He'll always find a way to surprise us since he only repeated the same 11 once in 30 games.

About the match, i think Liverpool will play in counter-attack and we'll have a hard time penetrating their defense and i hope that the fans don't start booing the team if they start failing some passes. When we're winning we have the best crowd in the world, but when we're not performing our beloved fans love digging our own grave in the middle of the game.

Hope Moretto keeps a clean sheet, it's of massive importance to win without conceding, even though it will be very difficult.

FORÇA RAPAZES!
