Benfica — Friday, April 8.

As Benfica move ever closer to a record 34th Portuguese Championship, they have also made the largest jump in this week's Fox Soccer Rankings. A run of seven wins and two draws have helped the Eagles move up eight places to sixteenth in the rankings. Boss Giovanni Trapattoni has survived a mini mid-season slump and criticism of his defensive tactics to bring his side to the within touching distance of their first Portuguese league title since 1994.

Simao Sabrosa leads Benfica with thirteen goals, supported by Nuno Gomes and much traveled Brazilian Geovanni with seven and six goals. With seven games to go, Benfica lead Sporting, Braga and Porto by six points with a reasonably straight forward run-in. None of their next five games are against top six opposition and there is a good chance that the title will be wrapped up before the last two games of the season against city rivals Sporting and finally Boavista.

Porto is struggling to hang on to a place in the top 25 after dropping nine places to twenty-fourth this week. This weekend they have a crucial derby game against Boavista, the result of which could go a long way to deciding whether or not they earn one of the two automatic Champions League group spots for next year, have to start in the third qualifying round or miss out altogether and make do with a UEFA Cup position.

We haven't won anything yet and our Uefa Cup campaign wasn't brilliant. Let's save our name for some while.

Good to see us being the best portuguese side on the list. Still no reason to lay back and relax now, as LPC just said, still a long way to go for the trophies we are willing to clinch.

That's what I wanted to remark at first ... must've been the first time for Rangers since 3 years, no? We have the same situation though, being ahead of Porto.
