Serie A Week 30 - 5/4/09 (13.00 UK)
Palermo - Torino
Stadio Renzo Barbera
Giancarlo Camolese makes his return to the Torino bench in a very difficult trip to the Stadio Renzo Barbera.
Camo was brought back after a four-year hiatus when Walter Novellino got the axe in the wake of three consecutive defeats. This means he is the third tactician to take charge this season, as Gianni De Biasi was sacked on December 8. He inherits a worrying situation, as the Granata are in joint penultimate place and already two points adrift of the safety zone.
Palermo haven’t had the best time of it recently either, mixing a 5-2 triumph over Lecce with embarrassing defeats to Catania and Chievo. Fabrizio Miccoli was sorely missed in the last game at the Bentegodi, but returns from his ban to inspire the front line. The statistics swing strongly in the Rosanero’s favour, as Torino are the only side in Serie A without an away victory this season, while their home record is of 10 wins, four losses and not a single stalemate. To make matters worse for the northerners, they haven’t conquered Sicily in the top flight since a 1-0 result in September 1962.
It is a special game for former Palermo stars Eugenio Corini, Simone Barone, Paolo Hernan Dellafiore and Andrea Gasbarroni. Camolese is expected to adopt a 3-5-2 system with Alessandro Rosina supporting big hitman Rolando Bianchi, as Nicola Ventola is injured. Others sidelined are Elvis Abbruscato, Angelo Ogbonna, Marco Di Loreto and the suspended Marco Pisano.
Palermo have two players out on a ban, Cesare Bovo and Mattia Cassani, while Igor Budan, Roberto Guana and Mark Bresciano remain on the treatment table even after the break for international duty. This means 19-year-old Michel Morganella could get his debut in defence with the impressive Simon Kjaer, who has attracted interest from Juventus, Milan and Inter.
Watch out for Fabrizio Miccoli (Palermo) – In this battle of the little big men with Torino’s Rosina, Miccoli has seniority and an adoring crowd behind him. If Palermo truly perform, it’s usually down to him.
