Serie A Matchday 29:TORO vs sampdoria

Quote:
Serie A Week 29 - 22/3/09 (14.00 UK)
Torino - Sampdoria

Stadio Olimpico

With just five wins from 28 games in the League, Torino need to start being more deadly if they want to prolong their current spell in Serie A. Sampdoria, meanwhile, have collected just one win on the road this season – and suffered eight away day defeats. Could this be the match for Toro to revive their flagging fortunes? Or will Samp react to the, refuted, rumours that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is interested in the club like a teenage boy trying to impress the school cheerleader?

Last year these two teams met at Turin’s Stadio Olimpico in Week 7. It was an emotional match for Walter Novellino – in charge of Toro against his former club. The Granata had yet to win a match but finally ended that hoodoo by taking down Samp thanks to an 87th minute goal from Eugenio Corini. In mitigation, Doria had been down to 10 men for the second half after the dismissal of Sergio Volpi before the break for an elbow on Matteo Rubin.

Earlier this term Samp came out on top thanks to a late strike from Claudio Bellucci. It should have been expected that the home side would take the three points though as Toro have failed to conquer Marassi since 1993. The Bulls have a better record at home in this fixture though – the last two seasons have seen them win 1-0 over the Blucerchiati, while also there have been three draws. Since 1993, Samp have just one win at Torino.

One thing that Torino must do is buck up their ideas in the first half. They have scored just one goal in the opening 45 of their last 12 Serie A matches. That said, they have gone for eight matches without conceding a goal before the interval. They must find a way to combine that prudent defending with some clinical finishing at the other end.

Toro will have to compete without the aid of inspirational forward Alessandro Rosina, who has been spending time in the recovery room with long-term injury victim Elvis Abbruscato. Sampdoria only have slight concerns in their camp as defenders Pietro Accardi and Daniele Gastaldello, along with midfielder Nenad Krsticic, are the only ones who will be sidelined on Sunday.

Keep an eye on: Giampaolo Pazzini (Sampdoria) – With seven goals from seven games, Pazzini is undoubtedly the Samp star man. Against a side lacking confidence – like Toro – there is a real danger that he could tear them a new lower opening for their digestive tract, so to speak. His partnership with Antonio Cassano has been likened to the ‘Goal Twins’ of Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini, with Toto likely to be off in the summer make the most of this deadly duo while you can.

Last season: Torino 1-0 Sampdoria

Form guide: Torino (D W D L L) Sampdoria (D W W L D)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Torino (probable): Sereni; Rubin, Pisano, Natali, Colombo; Barone, Dzemaili, Corini, Abate; Bianchi, Stellone

Sampdoria (probable): Castellazzi; Raggi, Lucchini, Campagnaro; Pieri, Franceschini, Palombo, Sammarco, Padalino; Cassano, Pazzini

The Abate injury is brutal, man. Was he this fragile at Empoli last season? It seems like losing him for 10-14 days is becoming a semi-regular occurrence.
