Serie A Matchday 18: Genoa-Torino

Serie A Week 18 - 10/1/09 (17.00 UK)
Genoa - Torino
Stadio Ferraris

Confident Genoa welcome Torino to Marassi hoping to add another important win to their positive run in Serie A’s Week 18. However, the Granata, who have been struggling in recent weeks, shouldn’t be taken for granted and Saturday afternoon’s clash is set to be a heated one.

The Rossoblu are by far one of this term’s biggest revelations. They currently lie sixth with 29 points, only four less than Milan. However, a number of negotiations taking place in this January’s transfer window could potentially have a negative influence on the team.

“Diego Milito isn’t going anywhere,” commented President Enrico Preziosi after links with Inter. “He has a strong relationship with the city and that’s why we brought him back to Marassi. All these rumours are meaningless.”

Toro find themselves in the opposite situation of the Liguri. The Piemontesi had high expectations for the current season, but are now struggling to move out of the relegation zone, from which they are separated by a single point. However, following the return to the bench of Walter Novellino things have been improving slightly.

“We need to stay focused, work hard and we will come out of this tunnel,” said the former Sampdoria Coach. “We will buy a full-back but also gamble on our youngsters because they are our future.”

Both Genoa and Torino were successful in Week 17 against Chievo and Napoli respectively. The Grifoni comfortably beat the Granata in last year’s encounter and are hoping to repeat that kind of performance.

There will be several players missing on both sides although there are no suspensions. The biggest absentee may be Milito, who is suffering from a muscular injury and is doubtful. Raffaele Palladino is also injured.

Paolo Zanetti will be out and Simone Barone should step in to replace him. Angelo Ogbonna, Matteo Rubin and Elvis Abbruscato complete the Granata’s injury list. Novellino is still uncertain whether to include Alessandro Rosina in the starting XI, but in the end the attacking midfielder should be preferred to Aimo Diana.

Keep an eye on: Ruben Olivera (Genoa) – The Uruguayan ace was meant to leave Marassi but has decided to stay put and will get a chance from the start this weekend. Now it’s up to him to show whether he is still worth something for Il Grifone.

Last season: Genoa 3-0 Torino

Form guide: Genoa (D D W D W) Torino (D L L L W)
Genoa (probable): Rubinho; Biava, Ferrari, Bocchetti; M.Rossi, T.Motta, Juric, Criscito; Jankovic, Olivera, Gasbarroni

Torino (probable): Sereni; Di Loreto, Natali, Pratali, Pisano; Abate, Dzemaili, Barone, Rosina; R.Bianchi, Amoruso

Zanetti : I still remember my first day at Inter. I arrived with a plastic bag with my boots inside and I crossed the crowd of fans who were asking who I was. That's where it all started.....

Genoa-Torino in doubt Wednesday 7 January, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This weekend's Serie A encounter between Genoa and Torino at Marassi could be postponed due to snow.

The game is scheduled to kick off at 5pm on Saturday but adverse weather conditions have jeopardised the fixture.

While the pitch has been covered by protecting sheets, the fear is that the roads around the ground may be dangerous and there have been huge delays on the motorways.

None of the other Week 18 clashes are believed to be at threat from the weather, but conditions in Udine are worsening.

There has been some snowfall around the Stadio Friuli over the last few days and temperatures are below zero ahead of the Zebrette's meeting with Sampdoria on Sunday.

Milito to miss three matches Thursday 8 January, 2009

Genoa goal machine Diego Milito still hasn't recovered from an abdominal injury that he sustained before Christmas.

It was a stellar end to 2008 for the Argentine marksman, who leads the Serie A Capocannoniere chart with 12 goals.

However, Milito missed Genoa's last game of last year against Chievo due to an abdominal pain and that problem still hasn't healed.

The Prince now looks likely to miss out on the Grifone's Serie A games against Torino and Lecce and their Coppa Italia encounter with Inter.

Milito had to skip Genoa's 3-3 friendly against Livorno earlier in the week and the club are worried about the lack of progress on the road to recovery.

The Rossoblu have moved to rule out a hernia, but they haven't given a definite diagnosis, instead labelling Milito's problem as a “lower-back syndrome.”

Same result as last year...

I was really pissed when I realized I had slept through the game, but looks like I didn't miss much. Watched the replay, its really clear that we need to reinforce the defense in the coming weeks.

FORZA VECCHIO CUORE GRANATA!

Terrible performance, bizarre decisions by Novellino. In addition to the strange lineup to start, Diana for Amoruso at half was just mystifying.
