Coppa Italia 2008-2009

So yet again we have a formatting change in the Coppa Italia. Maybe the cup would have more prestige if the FIGC just chose a format and stuck with it?

Anyways, this time there will be teams from Serie C1, C2, and D, though not all of them. In the First Round, 36 lower league teams will face off in 18 matches. The winners of these 18 matches will go into the Second Round where all Serie B teams enter. The 20 winners of these matches will go on to the Third Round where Serie A teams that placed 9-17 and the three newly promoted teams will enter. (So, that includes us.) The 16 winners of those matches go to the Fourth Round, where they play off again to get down to eight at which point the top eight Serie A teams enter for the Round of 16.

So what does this mean for Toro? As I pointed out earlier, we will be entering into the Third Round. We don't know our opponent quite yet, but it will be one of three teams. The First Round in our bracket will be Foligno-Pergocrema. Foligno finished 4th in Serie C1/A last season and Pergocrema won promotion from Serie C2/A to C1/A last season. The winner of that game will travel to Brescia. We will in turn face the winner of that game at the Olimpico. I don't have exact dates for this yet (I can find them shortly), but this will all be taking place in August.

Should we beat Brescia/Foligno/Pergocrema we would then face the winner of Frosinone/Crotone/Serie D TBD vs. Livorno/Novara/Real Marcianese in the Fourth Round. If we win that match we would face Fiorentina in the Round of 16.

Given our draw, my expectation is that we at least get to the Round of 16, but any more would be fanatastic as well.

1-1 after full time so we head into extra time...Brescia had a man sent off early in the first half and Rosina equalized on a penalty earned by Di Michele. We were not great in the first half, but have kept the Brescia defense busy in the second half, though Viviano has been making some good saves for them.

Not a good day for Serie A teams though, Lecce, Chievo, and Palermo knocked out by Serie C (!) teams.

2-1 is the final score and Toro advances after extra time. Great strike from Di Michele to win it, though we should have played better to begin with. Bianchi was at the stadium and was presented in an informal way to the fans before the match.

I thought the first leg is September 18? Or have they made it just one leg?

Answered my own question, just one leg:

http://www.channel4.com/sport/footba...lia/sep3p.html

There are some pluses and minuses to this. On the plus side it is one fewer fixture we have to worry about, but then again we only get one chance, though this is in front of our home crowd. I'd say Livorno are about as good as Brescia so we will need to play a little bit better if we want to advance to the next round. I think we can though especially since our players are now fit.

Ventola
Malonga-Abbruscato
Barone-Zanetti-Corini
Ogbonna-Natali-Pisano-Diana
Sereni

Bench: Fontana, Colombo, Franceschini, Rubin, Abate, Vailatti, Rosina

Well, the Coppa clearly isn't our priority, but Natali and Rosina are back.

This is on ESPN 360 for those of us who have it, but for some reason the video player isn't working - it launches, but no image displays. (I just downloaded the newest version).
