So yet again we have a formatting change in the Coppa Italia. Maybe the cup would have more prestige if the FIGC just chose a format and stuck with it?
Anyways, this time there will be teams from Serie C1, C2, and D, though not all of them. In the First Round, 36 lower league teams will face off in 18 matches. The winners of these 18 matches will go into the Second Round where all Serie B teams enter. The 20 winners of these matches will go on to the Third Round where Serie A teams that placed 9-17 and the three newly promoted teams will enter. (So, that includes us.) The 16 winners of those matches go to the Fourth Round, where they play off again to get down to eight at which point the top eight Serie A teams enter for the Round of 16.
So what does this mean for Toro? As I pointed out earlier, we will be entering into the Third Round. We don't know our opponent quite yet, but it will be one of three teams. The First Round in our bracket will be Foligno-Pergocrema. Foligno finished 4th in Serie C1/A last season and Pergocrema won promotion from Serie C2/A to C1/A last season. The winner of that game will travel to Brescia. We will in turn face the winner of that game at the Olimpico. I don't have exact dates for this yet (I can find them shortly), but this will all be taking place in August.
Should we beat Brescia/Foligno/Pergocrema we would then face the winner of Frosinone/Crotone/Serie D TBD
vs. Livorno/Novara/Real Marcianese in the Fourth Round. If we win that match we would face Fiorentina in the Round of 16.
Given our draw, my expectation is that we at least get to the Round of 16, but any more would be fanatastic as well.
