Coppa Italia 2007/2008

The Coppa Italia has changed its format yet again. There will be a first phase consisting of 24 teams (this year's 22 Serie B teams plus Napoli and Genoa). There will be two one-leg, rounds in this first phase to produce six teams to enter the second phase. These six teams plus the 9-18 seeds (9th-17th placed in Serie A last season plus Serie B champion Juventus), will enter into the second phase, making 16 teams. There will be one round in the second phase consisting of just one leg. The eight winning teams will go into the third phase, or the tournament proper I guess you could say. There, the teams will be bracketed with the 1-8 seeds consisting of the defending champions plus the rest of last year's Serie A (the European participants). The third phase will consist of a Round of 16, quarterfinals, and semifinals all played in the normal Coppa style, with two legs for each round based on a bracket. This time though, the final will be a one-off game at a venue yet to be determined. No Serie C teams will participate.

So, concerning Torino, as 17th seed we will enter the second phase and need to beat whoever we are drawn against to get to the third phase. We will find out our opponents after the first phase is over, it starts on August 15 and the second game is on August 18. I believe we would play on August 29.

All of those teams are Serie B teams, though as we learned rather unpleasantly with Crotone last year, that's not a guaranteed passage through.

Torino v Roma would be a good game even at that stage of the competition I still remember that Coppa Italia final between Torino and Roma in the early 90's... my first memory of football

Sorry for making an unpleasant memory, Dean.

Torino vs. Rimini tomorrow. They stormed their way through the first two rounds, so I would be wary. We went out of the Coppa against Crotone in the second round last time, so I'm not 100% confident of this.

Ticket sales are a mere 4,500 for the match, I guess the fans don't care much for the competition, though if Roma come to town, I'm sure it will be much different.

19 called for the tie tomorrow including two youth players:

Portieri: Fontana, Sereni

Difensori: Comotto, Di Loreto, Lanna, Natali, Ogbonna.

Centrocampisti: Barone, Bottone, Corini, Grella, Rosina, Vailatti, Zanetti, Domenico Bettini (n. 26), Davide Cristino (n. 25).

Attaccanti: Bjelanovic, Oguro, Ventola.

I'd go with:
Bjelanovic-Ventola
Rosina-Corini-Zanetti-Barone
Lanna-Di Loreto-Natali-Comotto
Sereni

Pretty strong lineup, pretty much all the players on the bench would be nice to see get time.

Into extra time now with Rimini. We went ahead 2-0 with first half goals from Ventola and Barone, but they scored two in the last five minutes to make it 2-2. Rosina has scored in extra time so ATM we are up 3-2.

Heh, I think a bit differently with this one...Rimini are not a bad team at all in Serie B, IMO have good players like Ricchiuti. And given our bad track record in the Coppa over the last few years I'm not surprised.

Besides, we're using Fontana instead of Sereni in goal and Novellino started messing with the team when we were 2-0 up. Put in Vailatti, then our new signing Motta, and then youngster Bottone for Ventola, Corini, and Barone.

BUt whatever, we're winning and now Rimini are down to 10 men.

Is it a little bit biased if I say that Ale is probably the most talented italian young player at the moment?

Great goal by Rosina. The first goal was a great team move too, the kind of stuff I really like to see.

Alright, we're at it again against Roma. Maybe our performance against them is a stepping stone for a victory in the Coppa Italia this midweek.

Il tecnico Novellino ha convocato 20 calciatori per Torino-Roma di domani (ore 19.30):

Portieri: Fontana, Sereni.

Difensori: Comotto, Dellafiore, Di Loreto, Lanna, Natali.

Centrocampisti: Barone, Bottone, Grella, Lazetic, Vailatti, Zanetti.

Attaccanti: Bjelanovic, Di Michele, Malonga, Oguro, Recoba, Stellone, Ventola.

I'm honestly not sure whether Novellino will throw out a strong squad or will go for a weaker squad and focus on the weekend league match. He will probably use Comotto and Lanna since they are suspended anyways for the weekend. Perhaps:

Ventola-Di Michele
Barone--Zanetti--Grella--Vailatti
Lanna-Dellafiore-Natali-Comotto
Sereni

Brilliant, 3-1 and I think that's the most goals we've since we beat Rimini 3-2 earlier in this competition. Recoba with another and Comotto with a few minutes left, and Fontana made a miracle save after that. Still, they have an away goal, so we need to be on top of our game for the second leg if we are to advance.
